Hello All!

I have not had much luck locating anyone that does data retrieval. I have one external drive that is not working, I am hoping data retrieval specialist can get me the data in some form. In the US this process is not that expensive. I do not know what to expect here. Is it better to get these things done in Uruguay or Paraguay?

I would also appreciate any advice on where to buy computers and other tech items. For example I am searching for a decent used DSLR camera. I had to sell my Fujifilm X a3, which I loved, to make the trip here. My goal is to improve my photography so that I can eventually do some professional work.

Any and all feedback and advice is much appreciated!!

Thanks!

There is a street of camera shops. Libertad near corrientes.
But the general rule is most imported cameras, electronics, phones, and similar things, which are usually made by multinationals in China, are about double the price of the same things in europe or the USA.
So for a specific camera, its always better to buy one in the US or Europe and figure out a way to bring it yourself on an airplane, or have a friend do it.

things made in argentina are often more reasonably priced, but imported ANYTHING is expensive.
Mercado Libre.ar, the not really equivalent to ebay, is a good place to see what prices are- usually its one of the cheapest places to buy anything, about 75% from businesses, but the rest from private individuals.
And facebook marketplace, since its free, is an interesting place to find deals on all kinds of things as well.

Regarding cameras: a number of us still remember the French photographer who was murdered in broad daylight for his camera in Plaza San Martin. I'm not suggesting that you wave a smartphone around in unfamiliar places but given the special niche your old camera filled and given that a lot of people use smartphones for that kind of work, if you want to improve your technique in that field, couldn't you use your existing phone for the time being and buy a specialist camera after you have become more atuned to life in this city?

Hi! Thank you so much for your reply. Wow! Thanks for telling me the story about the French Photographer. I am also a writer and true crime buff and will look into this story further! The problem with my phone is that it doesn't zoom and I am not learning or improving using it for photos. I do use it but I want to improve. I was considering the 4 week intensive offered at Mente Argentina. They also have a dual learn Spanish and photography at once. They told me I can use my phone but can also lend me a DSLR. What niche did my Fujifilm camera fill? I liked it because it had the 2 knobs on top, easier for me to manipulate, more ergonomic for me. I also saw a SONY beginner model at FB Marketplace for 200,000 pesos but they didn't reply.

Thanks so much for your reply! I have no plans to go to the US or the EU anytime in the near future. I heard you can get better deals in Montevideo. Is that true? I did look at Merado Libre, their selection is very limited. I am looking also on FB Marketplace. I am willing to try a used SONY instead of a Fujifilm. New is beyond my affordability.

Try Galeria Jardin, in Florida St. Three floors of computer and tech stores.
Hi! Thanks so much for your reply! Great, I will go over there and take a look. I appreciate your sharing this with me.

According to the reviews etc it was designed to be operated with just one hand for selfies so I presumed that you bought it to create content for uploading. My apologies for jumping to conclusions about how you used it.

No I wasn't put off by your remarks at all. Because I admit, I'm still a beginner and some cameras are sold just for this market. I thought maybe that was what you were referring to. Like maybe it was a cousin to a bridge camera.
