And this just in from the World of Beer blog:

My Favourite Beer Place of 2011

I did a fair bit of travelling in 2011, some 50,000+ air miles according to my mileage club statements, and I visited a good number of bars, brewpubs, breweries, distilleries, festivals and other sundry drinks destinations. But as I reflect on the year past, one spot stands out as the single most extraordinary beer locale of my 2011.

It is the Buena Birra Social Club in Buenos Aires...

Pretty impressive.

Again, check to see which beers they have on tap, because usually they just have 2 to 3, but they might have ramped up production a bit.

I'm off to the grocery store to buy a proper beer or two myself. (And some for my roommate as well.)

Excuse the contradiction, but Kuntsmann is an absolutely horrendous beer in my opinion.

Bullers (somebody put up the link earlier) actually makes an IPA that smells like an IPA should, though it has no body.

Bullers makes a fine dry stout, though again no body --but an excellent beer I think.

The two cervelars are owned by the same guy, and I (usually) like the antares barley wine they sell in a bottle.

Argentina is, I'd agree, the wrong country for beer.

Re: Kuntsmann

If you don't like it, then you probably don't like a classic English ale. Nothing wrong with that, but I've had English guys here nod their heads and say "Yep, that's what an ale's supposed to taste like."

Re: Antares Barley Wine

It actually tastes quite a bit like an IPA.

Antares also made an IPA that was available recently in their pub in P. Soho and it did NOT taste like an IPA should.

Are you from anywhere in Europe, Napolean?

Is it my imagination, or are there no heavy-bodied beers produced there? I'm sure there must be some, but the dozen or so I've tried weren't....

How about cider? Not the christmassy Sidra stuff.
Has anyone seen Strongbow or Brothers?
Thanks!

Haven t seen any Irish or English cider here . The only European stuff I have seen is from Spain and that is very similar to the Argentine stuff.

Bangalore pub and curry house in Peru ,San Telmo used to do cider UK/Irish style. I only went there once and they were out of it ,so can´t vouch for quality . Internet write ups give it the thumbs up

Thanks, John and Aleina! I'll call Bangalore and report back. (though I think you mean Gibralter, because Bangalore is in Palermo)

Bangalore & Gibraltar are owned by the same guy/people. Also a Chinese restaurant on Araoz a half a block from Cordoba on the Cabrera side of Cordoba. (Maybe Niceto Vega, but it doesn't cut through to Scalabrini Ortiz.) So three English Pub restaurants with the same owner(ship group).

ANSWER: No, I'm not from Europe.

But... while on the Kunstmann isn't great, but... topic:

Kunstmann makes a "Gran Torobayo" (~Strong Ale) that is 7.5% alcohol and about AR$21 for about 500ml. My English roommate used it in a recipe that called for a strong ale last night and said that it was perfect for that.

So I guess that that would make it "heavy".

I believe they have a couple of places ... I know at least in Recoleta they have a place in front of the cemetery. It's kind of like a sports bar: has TVs on all the time with sports channels and has the typical bar food (pizzas, burgers, quesadillas, nachos, etc... in my opinion not very good food, and overpriced). If you're in the area (or if you go to the movies ... it's down the street from Village Cines), it's worth trying a couple of their beers AND IF I'M NOT MISTAKEN THEY HAVE IPA!

In conclusion: go for the beer, not for the food.
