This translates to roughly 25 million people living below the poverty line. Recent data from the INDEC national statistics bureau indicates a significant increase in poverty, with the rate reaching 52.9% in the first half of 2024, compared to the same period in 2023.

So here is the source, straight from the horses mouth. Indec Q3 & Q4-2024 = 38.1% of the population living below the poverty line.

I am not seeing the 60% you stated???? Nor the 52-57% you subsequently stated as the "current" figure???
Or perhaps you were just making up numbers to inflate the issue, mislead people and ultimately "sell your cause"?
Ironic considering the first posts in this very thread were questioning a more "optimistic" view expressed in the article as being fake. Seems those with a more "pessimistic" view of the situation can be guilty of the same mistruths.

(The Q1 & Q2-2025 INDEC results will be published in September. According to most private watch-dogs and even UNICEF, poverty in Argentina continues to decrease. Some even go as far to claim it is now at its lowest level in 7 years although serious issues remain.)

INDEC has long been criticized for manipulating key economic indicators. The trick is to decide what poverty rate you want to report, then set the poverty threshold so just the right number of people fall below it.

Right now, the poverty level for a family of 4 is about 1,200 USD per month in Argentina and 2,600 USD in the US (if you apply the same criteria, like including rent). If you set the poverty threshold in Argentina at $2,600 - like in the US, you'd probably see a poverty rate of 70–80%. But if INDEC says it's 38.1% and everybody calls that a great success or an Argentine miracle - OK, so be it.

I have noticed how expensive imported products are here. The same products from places like France (cheese, jam etc) cost MUCH less (even half the price) in the US. Why is this? I thought the market was open now?

They are open to import it...they are also open to charging you a 200% margin (*wink wink)
