I have never heard any jazz in Buenos Aires before. I'm sure it exists, of course, I just personally haven't experienced it, and I'm wondering if I should expect it to be very different from the jazz I'm used to?

I saw this Jazz Festival is coming up: http://agendacultural.buenosaires.gob.ar/eventopadre/vivielfestivalinternacionalbuenosairesjazz/6088

I'd love to go with my family, I just want to mentally prepare myself for any differences there may be!

I would say ther could be a lot of differences--or a few. Maybe some big, maybe some small, maybe some old, maybe some new.

There are some great musicians performing. I saw the Gonzalo Bergara Quartet at a great venue and chatted with him last year in the states. A lot of these musicians work professionally overseas, where they can make more mangos. This festival gives them a chance to perform at home.

Argentine jazz musicians are very worldly- I have seen them playing most every style of jazz. Certainly there is a lot of Marsalis style retro, a fair amount of tango inflected stuff, some brazilian influence, but, in general, you have musicians who can play just about anything.
I havent heard much free jazz, but I am sure its out there too.
Just go, and enjoy.

Personally, when its not jazz festival, I hit Thelonius pretty often, have never been disapointed by their bookings.
