Furthermore, does anyone know how much it usually costs to have an accountant prepare the documents for the annual asset tax (impuesto de Bienes Personales) that is due on April 1st? I know that that the government is now charging 1.25% of purchase price of property for foreigners unless one has residency.

Rob, I'm admitted in the state of California, but I think you should contact a Virginia lawyer. The local (county) bar associations probably can refer you to somone who is competent to do that. I'm guessing the fee would be a few hundred dollars.

Rob, you could use 1. notarial services at the US Consulate http://argentina.usembassy.gov/notarial_appointments.html or 2. A local notary / attorney and have the document translaed and Apostilled (The US signed the Apostille Treaty - Convención de la Haya) so the document should be valid in all US states. Cheers.

Kre8, (i) an accountant will probably charge you btw ar$ 500 and ar$ 1000 for doing your "Bienes Personales" taxes (annual assets tax) (ii) yes, pursuant to provision 6 of assets tax act number 26.317 (7/12/07) you have to pay 1.25%. (iii) if you want to pay assets tax I undertsand you will have to find an argentine willing to be responsible for your taxes and register at AFIP as your representative "responsable sustituto".
