Learning To Cook Using Limited Range Of Local Ingredients

Sabe la tierra is a nice farmers market in vicente lopez : https://www.facebook.com/SabelaTierra?ref=br_tf

We lived in Recoleta for 20 years and recently moved to a small town in the provincia de Cba. The food available here is much more limited than what we were able to find in BA. The vegetables here are all old and bad, for the most part. Try those stores that polostar mentioned. The fish stores on that block do not have good fish. Be wary! We bought our bread at Lepe, the panaderia owned by those two guys who have a segment on the gourmet channel and it is very good, although expensive. Also, there are some organic growers that deliver to different parts of the city, in Recoleta it was twice a week. Their veggies were very good. I don't remember the names so you will have to google that. Barrio Chino has some good things and we went there about once a month. I agree it takes a bit of time. We are retired so we have plenty of that and enjoyed looking and sometimes finding good quality produce and meat. The average diet, as serafina stated is limited and most probably contributes to the lack of available food items.

Happy Lady thanks, but what do you do about fish and seafood in Argentina? Do you just not eat it anymore? I love fish but the seafood here is always of such bad quality. Any suggestions? I'm thinking of sticking to imported canned anchovies and sardines.

You can make requests at your local vegetable/fruit store, they will get it for you in their shipments from the mercado central. So if there is a specific vegetable, spice, etc you can do that (mine once had a crate of unbrined olives for a client, never thought of buying that). They can get you more than what is on display.

Very fresh, good fish at the mercado itinerante on Saturdays, Malabia esq. Nicaragua. Sometimes there is a fish vendor with no one waiting in line: DON'T go there. Right next to a cheese wagon run by two friendly, very nice women, is the terrific fish vendor. Take a number and be prepared to wait, but it is worth it.

Are you in capital federal, perhaps willing to travel by bus or subway with your errands?

Thanks, REd Beanz. for that info. Wish that I had done some research and had known that sooner. Polostar, Yes!. We eat sardines, tuna, and anchovies, all canned. Also, we usually ordered fish at several restaurants that had a good reputation. When our children come to visit, they bring canned seafood that I can't get here. Crabmeat, being one, and whatever else they think that we would like. I think that of all the foods, I miss seafood the most. Once, years ago, I bought fish at one of abovementioned markets in Recoleta and we suffered severe food intoxication. We just were afraid to try them again. Many years ago, Carrefour ( the main one) used to have a good fresh seafood section and a good variety and we would take a small cooler and stock up. Gone are those days.

i think only in the barrio chino, and it will not be cheap

I think that barrio chino is a good suggestion, both Tina & Co and Casa China have a very nice selection and many products that I have not seen in other stores (they have kale!). Also, try the good branches of the big supermarkets (the ones in fancy neighborhoods are usually much better than branches of the same supermarket in "not so fancy" neighborhoods), such as Jumbo Palermo. I would also add Bodega Amparo (in Palermo), which not only sales wine but has a very large grocery store.
I think some farmers markets are closed during the summer, but you still have Sabe La Tierra in Vicente Lopez and San Fernando. Also, if you are interested in healthy or natural foods, I suggest Granomadre in Palermo, it's a natural food store with great stuff.
For fish, I have always found that Asia Oriental in barrio chino has excellent and very fresh fish and seafood at very reasonable prices in comparison to other places.

Brought my own coconut oil from USA. Running low on supply. You can't get it in South America, weirdly enough, even in Brazil.
