Hi all,

I am investigating the possibility of moving to Argentina to retire.
On this forum people in general seem to be saying that the health system is quite good.
I had bowel cancer over 4 years ago and after treatment I have been in remission since then but I need to plan for what I would do if the cancer came back
after I moved.
Is the quality of cancer care good in Argentina and would it compare well with rich countries like the UK where I am from?
Secondly is the public state funded system adequate for this or would I need to go private?
Could I get private health insurance even though I have this pre-existing condition? What are costs like for private health insurance in Argentina (just a rough range or ballpark figure).
Is it better to just self-fund cancer treatment in Argentina? What does for example a course of radiotherapy or chemotherapy cost in Argentina (again just a rough range or ballpark figure)
Apologies for all the questions but any information would be really helpful.

Thanks,

Jogey

Hello, private insurance will be dependent on your age group...most privates will not insure anyone over 65,although Hospital Italiano is an exception to the age cap. Count on $100 +/- $usd + per month if in the upper age categories.

Self pay for example recently paid $14,000 (+/-$30 usd)pesos for a CT scan.
$6000 (+/-$12usd) for a single x-ray...

Thanks Neil that's really helpful. It actually sounds quite inexpensive for what you are getting.

The issue is that you will be asked to declare any preexisting conditions, and even though they cannot reject you, price will be different.

You will have access to the Public Health system where everything will be covered for free ( you will need to learn how to navigate the public system, have patience and accept that it is not fancy ) The two main hospitals in the city for cancer treatments are https://buenosaires.gob.ar/hospitalmariecurie and https://institutoroffo.uba.ar/
For private treatment I suggest https://alexanderfleming.org/ ( I honestly don't have any information on prices / costs but maybe you can email them ).
Another option is to become " self employed " that way you enroll into monotributo and get insurance through social security ( obra social ) for workers. Coverage is progressive but after 6 months of contributing you should have full coverage. It is not the greatest but it is another option ( less crowded than the public system ).
Oncology is covered in full both using public, social security or private coverage.
Some useful resources: https://www.argentina.gob.ar/salud/mapa-de-acceso-al-tratamiento-oncologico/circuito-caba
Hope this helps some.

That sounds about right, we're (2 of us) currently paying around 90,000 pesos per month for OSDE plan 210, the amount increases by 8-10% per month.

No health insurance , Benjamins always buys a place in front of the line, plus no dealing with all the red tape of health insurance and the ton of forms , papers, authorizations and appointments.
As Neil just gave you an idea of the cash prices.
I know it's hard for some people to imagine you can actually afford a surgery with walk around money.
Quality of care is top notch.( i will go as far as saying ,more humane)
Good luck to you Pilgrim
