Hi everyone,

So I'm planning on moving to South America, and getting residency through my Argentine daughter. However, I'm really more interested in living in Brazil. Does anybody know about working in other South American countries once I have Argentine residency? Specifically, Brazil?

Any info would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Jesse

It will be relatively easy to get your permanent residency in Argentina based on the familial relationship. Unfortunately it will not grant you mercosur status. You must be a citizen of a mercosur country for that. I have a DNI based on my marriage here, and it has "Extranjero" on the front in giant red letters. You will be physically closer to Brazil, but your legal status will be basically unchanged, as far as I know.

Here are some other threads on the topic:

http://baexpats.org/topic/19108-brazil-visa/
http://baexpats.org/topic/8407-travelling-to-brazil-with-dni-and-without-passport/

Reading through those threads it sounds like you *might* make it across the border with only a DNI on a lucky day, but I imagine that working would be another matter entirely.

Another legal option: you could reside in a border Brazilian town like Foz de Iguazu or Urugayana with a tourist visa, live for month at a time and hop over the border to renew your visa every 6 months or so.
