Messengers and social networks

Thanks a lot. Telegram is used in Europe for about everything. Keeping in touch with people, news, selling/buying second hand stuff, find a place to rent... Whatsapp is more for older people (used to be popular like 10 years ago as I know).

What about Twitter? I know it's popular in neighbouring Brazil...
Not sure where in Europe you are from but in Ireland whatsapp is definitely the main messenger app. Barely anyone uses telegram.

HenryHoneyBalls and AdrianB: might be different in each country or for each generation, but I personnally don't know anybody using Whatsapp save for a few older people.
In any case, even if used (I totally trust you on that, as I said I might just not be in the right category), it doesn't affect my life in any way as everybody is on Telegram, and if not they at least have iMessage. Administrations use email (when they reply) and I've never heard of buying things on whatsapp or communicating with government services on whatsapp, or any other messenger).
That seems crazy for me. I like to do the 'serious' things by email as I can archive it accordingly, and it's easier to set calendar items and reminders directly from there. That would include medical and administrative things for sure.

Even my lawyers have been sending me documents for me to sign over whatsapp and I keep on telling them they have to send all documents to me via e-mail, which they finally do if you tell them. Same thing with travel agents. This is because everyone has a cell phone here but very few have a computer and people don't like reading e-mails.

Telegram is only used by drug dealers and Russians here. WhatsApp, on the other hand... You'll get used to it.

Telegram is basically crypto scams, pedophiles, and porn, (so the same as in Europe I assume).
In countries that have experienced heavy internet censorship, Telegram is more popular since it has built-in features to overcome restrictions or blocks. In many places, it has become mainstream and is even more popular than WhatsApp here. For example, a newspaper's Telegram channel can have more readers than its website.

Ultimately, the choice depends on your preference for the type of corporate surveillance: US-based big tech with government ties or a third-party with less transparent affiliations but presumably better commitment to privacy.

I also believe that Telegram offers better features and a more open API, but ultimately, it comes down to which platform your friends are using.

Here in Argentina, everything is done through WhatsApp. It seems like nobody calls actual phone numbers anymore.
