The guy was caught on surveillance camera. That ten dollar book is going to cost him a pretty penny.
As William Shakespeare said... "Lord, what fools these mortals be!"
He was shipped off to Mexico faster that you can say "Chicken Quesadilla."

This is why, in the USA, Trump requires a minimum $1million dollar "donation" to appoint someone ambassador- the "best people" dont read, so no danger of Sondland, for example, shoplifting a book. But if you sell Bronx Colors Orange Makeup, look out.

Imagine risking your prestigious job over a book? A blow job, well I get it. But a book?

the article mentions the book was "biografía de Giacomo Casanova"
which might explain his behavior a bit: arguably he felt a bit embarrassed buying such kind of a book
and this could trigger him to do this costly mistake.

Basically his attempt to avoid minor spotlight (about buying this kind of book) lead him to attracting much more spotlight.

Remember, the guy was 76. Senility is always lurking, when you get up there. Maybe he doesnt even remember doing it.

Perhaps. That would make more sense. That he stuck it in between a newspaper seems like he was trying to conceal it though. If he just walked out with it in his hand that is another story.

People from poor to quite wealthy shoplift across the globe. I’ll bet it wasn’t his first time. Unfortunate that he didn’t consider his public position before risking it.
