I don't normally go down to La Boca, but made an exception today to see the Louise Bourgeois exhibition at the Proa. While its true her spiders are amazing, and enormous, the rest of it left me a bit cold. However as my companion pointed out, it's not difficult to see why a nation obsessed with psychoanalysis would like her.

However, having dismissed that in ten minutes I realised that in 2 years of living here, I had never been to the Museo Benito Quinquela about 100 metres down the road. This is a different kettle of fish and probably the finest collection of Porteno art in BA. The top floor is dedicated to Quinquela's work which while focussed on very "Boca" themes (docks / ships / workers etc) is a revelation and very different in the flesh from the posters you may have seen. Huge canvasses starting from around 1922, very forcefull, amazingly modern use of colour and an incredible feeling of life and activity. To be thoroughly recommended if you haven't already seen them. The lower floor has some more of his work, and then lots of other good Porteno art.

Probably the most interesting thing to see in La Boca, and you don't even have to drag yourself down the dreaded Caminito. So good in fact that my companion was lost track of time and was late for her shrink!
