Need advice on digital nomad visa vs work visa

Hey,

I have no experience experience with overstays, but anecdotally can say a lot of folks on the forum stick to is as gospel. Maybe the 3rd time comment is just to scare people out of it.

As for the nomad visa, I just got the application sent in last week for my 3rd one. They're 6 month transitory that can renew 1 time each. To my understanding, no legitimate pathway to permanent, just good for the term. So the long term value will depend on your personal situation.

Aside that, here's the federal application page https://www.argentina.gob.ar/servicio/tramitacion-de-ingreso-electronica-nomadas-digitales
Heads up, employment contract and proof of pay didn't cut it for mine this go, they're asking for a "note" from your employer saying your expected to remain employed for at least 6 months.

Feel free to ping if you have questions on that process, its a pretty crummy outdated system (online application/fee>embassy email and fee over phone+any additional items>head office eventual emails a pdf visa to use on entry).

Btw, there's tons of deeper advice on the forum about longer term permanent options if you'll eventually want that.
Were you able to apply from within Argentina?

I originally tried to go this route while I was still in the US but they lost my application and when they finally found it I was already here and denied me because I was already in the country (even though I paid the fee). 🥴 Just curious if anything has changed a since EOY 2022.

From what I can tell you can only do it from outside still.

Just curious, how did you find out your application got lost? They do seem to be running a bit slower than I remember, wondering if there is anywhere to badger after the embassy is done with their part of the process.

they literally were like "oh yeah, we didn't get notified we received your application. I found this during an audit". Lol cool thanks

Dang, was that with the embassy team or the headquarters team?

Or do you mean it got lost on the very first step, that would be embassy team. They are difficult, I had to call day after day to get to someone to pay the second fee. Not big on answering emails or voicemails.

Yeah it was the embassy team. I sent emails and got no response. I submitted it in November of 22 and then they found it in February of 2023. Once they found it they processed the payment (and denied me) within about a week.

It was such a bad experience I used it as a case study for my masters-level course in service design. 🤣

That's of course another possibility we haven't even considered yet^^ Though what would be the advantage of doing this "trial period" as a tourist vs doing it as a digital nomad?

Immigrating as a tourist is less initial paperwork but it adds another layer of complexity later on.
Staying 2x3 months as a tourist isn't really "less paperwork", it is almost no paperwork at all.

You'll have to show your passport on arrival and have your thumb print taken.

Almost 3 months later you'll have to spends half an hour at migraciones, then walk to a bank and pay the fee, and then return with the receipt.

The entire process may well take 3 hours, unless you can't find the bank.
