I've been waiting for someone to start a thread on this topic, but I guess I'll have to do it myself.

What do you think? To me it looks like a thinly veiled attempt by the government to intimate and reduce the amount of press freedom here. In case you don't know what I'm talking about there a link below summarizing the latest news.

This law is Nestor Kirchner's revenge to the Clarín Group for turning its back on him.
In my opinion the law is generally a bad law. Not only it doesn't fix the problems with the current law, but it also add some ridiculous and dangerous requirements and regulations.

Its hard to tell what effects will this law produce. There is probably going to be a legal battle. The law gives the media group one year to disinvest, which is ridiculous and goes against their "derechos adquiridos" (acquired rights?).

There is also the possibility that the elected legislator that will take office in December, will try to modify the law again.

In any case, we will probably won't see any actual change in the media for a couple of years, so i don't think this law will serve the K's possible reelection campaign. Its mostly just a payback from NK. Lo que se dice, un pase de factura...

That point of view only comes from a typical and classic advocate of anti-government policies and associate of pro and pass outdated authoritarian constituencies which unfortunately still remains at large in this country.

Is a law debated and passed democratically with majority by the congress, senate and the house of representatives, with votes from all the mayor political parties.

It is NOT to silence the press all the contrary, it is to diversify and finish with a monopoly of the multimedia's which is concentrated more and more in few hands, that's what it's all about.

So please, do not insist with "it is to silence the press" because it's not.

Its evident that the new media law was passed to punish and silence the press. But actually the latest shenanigans from the government and its croonies was blocking the distribution of the major newspapers Clarin and La Nacion.

What's distorted, certainly not facts. What is the purpose of restricting distribution through union cronies other than to control whats reported. Why not admit the obvious?

Well that in not true either, the fact is that those newspapers you are reading in conjunction with Clarin, La Nacion, Perfil, Ambito, Infobae, etc. Are the ones who control la majority of the media by Radio, TV, CableTV, Satellite's communications etc. etc. etc...resuming they are all for one and one for all with the only difference between them as using a different mask with the same head, a total monopoly with no diversification at all.

Besides, the group controls the manufacturing of paper for newspapers and one of the main news agencies from where papers are informed, as we have previously stated.
