Just tidying up my inbox and came across this advice from the British embassy here re legalizing a police certificate for tramite processing...
You would have to log on the Metropolitan Police web page

You have to search for "Subject Access" service.
Once you receive the original you will have to bring it here so we can send it to the Legalisatio Office in London. At present the fee is $ 241 and we cash with the exact amount or with VISA or Mastercard.
In actual fact you just have to have someone you know in NI go into the police station nearest your place of birth or last place of residence in NI with your NI number, passport copy etc and ask them for a letter certifying you have no criminal record registered against you. It costs nothing (5 pounds or so) and requires 1-3 days....
I am guessing the embasy was suggesting the process for the UK mainland nationals but for NI the process was infinitely cheaper and quicker..no apostilling etc. Hope it helps some poor soul on the tramite path I have just managed to leave!
