Please excuse the question if it’s stupid, but I’m pushing 80 (un viejo choto) and am easily confused.

I’ve read several nightmare accounts of how people’s SSI have been either delayed or halted, and were forced to jump through bureaucratic hoops to get them restored. Does the same problem apply to regular monthly SS payment sent to Galicia, Santander, or other banks in CABA?

Has anyone filled out the form (Direct Deposit sign-up form - Argentina), opened a local account and currently receive their payments hassle-free?

Also, what makes someone eligible for SSI?

Any help would be greatly, greatly (and also greatly) appreciated.

Listen...you are me....or I am you. Leave your SocSec in the U.S.....period. Have direct deposit. Have two debit accounts. One with CapOne....the other....your choice....maybe Schwab. Have a U.S. cellphone for message approval....and then...stop thinking. Do NOT tell SocSec that you are out of the country. Have a friend or family for your U.S. address. Last....stop thinking.

If you have a USD account in your name you can bring funds into Argentina to either a local USD account or a Peso account at the CCL rate using one of the investment banks mentioned here on the forum.

Guys above gave the perfect solution. To make things easy, just receive money in dollar in states, and use WesternUnion or whatever you like to transfer money to here for your expenses, it works perfect for me.

Thank you, Johngwyn- The problem is that my money’s sitting (languishing) in an account with Vanguard (an investment company, not a bank). It doesn’t issue credit cards, I only have checks

As I remain living in the mid 20th century, I’m absolutely ignorant (helpless) when it comes to computers, internet, WU, anything practical. (The truth is that I can’t even tie my shoes without getting my fingers stuck.)

I’d be eternally grateful and very happy to pay someone to come to my place and guide me through the process. Can you possibly recommend someone? A thousand thanks!

So why don't you just open a bank account in the US?

Hola CC- Why shouldn't US Soc-Sec know that I'm a US citizen and permanent resident of Argentina? And have you heard bad stories about people in my position who have had their SS payment sent to an International bank (Santander, Galicia, etc) with offices in Argentina?
