One More Reason To Learn Spanish...

It has always been the case that it is much easier for us Brazilians to understand Spanish than the other way around. Some claim that it is because Spanish is a bastardized version of Portuguese, but I have no idea how much truth is there on that claim.

Not much truth to that claim. Both evolved from the vulgar Latin. One could "maybe" make that claim about Gallego, but definitely not Castellano. Both

Camberiu, just curious ... can you understand perfectly Portuguese from Portugal? When I was taking Brazilian Portuguese classes, I tried listening to the radio, but could not understand much.

Yes I can. It can sound weird at times, but it is perfectly understandable. I still struggle to understand some British and Australian english, for example.

Can you understand this guy's Spanish? He is from Spain and I get at most 50% of it.

Probably around 50% also. I find informal speech in Spain very difficult to understand.

I'm well aware of the state of the Brazilian economy. You need to "bone up" on your knowledge of linguistics.
