Overstay Controls

3.5 years left last week no issues even had my socks sniffed by the AFIB dog. Well until the Uruguay immigrations side, the agent saw my stamps and then huffed and puffed a bit.. Ohhh AHHH! Growl and then politely stamped my passport. But with all the one day in and outs before the 3.5 years no wonder. I am married to an Arg woman and just before the elections I almost went for my residency but then looking at the history of Argentina I decided to give it a few years. Glad I did would have been the worst mistake I had ever made.

Yes it was a series of misadventures that caused that to happen, but without getting personal I contribute to this country in a few different ways. The only thing I've taken is free health care and I always make a financial contribution when they pass the hat at the hospital.

At any rate, I was posting this as a warning to others -- not to being taking to task for being sleep deprived and dumb one day a year and half ago. Jeez, no wonder people complain about this forum!

Yes a series of misadventures at both ends of your journey and having to argue with Immigration after sleep deprivation well anyone will sympathise. Thanks for posting and yes some obvious pointers about having some money in your pocket when travelling.

Did you not know about the admission charge before you set out? Thing is there are no ATMs at Ezieza before immigration of that I'm sure.

I've also seen Brazilian's turned back - at Heathrow - for not having a plausible story and/or no money. Phone calls do not help. Claiming they "contribute to the country" is something anyone can do and it doesnt operate for people on low or average incomes. Argentines I know also get close questioned about financial resources where they are staying etc. when trying to enter Europe. Personally I have found the rudest most arrogant Immigration Officers to be those at entry to the USA. However there is no "entitlement to entry".

I'm not at all sure that someone has the right to consular access at immigration as one hasnt technically entered the country. It applies if you are detained. Putting you back on the plane is not detention. In the end they let you in.

Your treatment was clearly wrong. Easy to say but you could have lodged a complaint with your Embassy about your treatment at both airports - after you recovered from no sleep.

Glad to hear that you have been able to enjoy Buenos Aires including free health care. Argentine is more generous than most other places in that regard.

vagabundo, you know some things about argentina that I don´t know, things that stopped you from obtaining residency. Please tell me about those things or let me know where I can learn of them.

Study the history of Argentina.. the poor peeps there they run the same cycle over and over agan like hamsters on a wheel. My guess the current democracy will not last and even now the politics have trashed the constitution and you have a dictatorship dressed up like a democracy.

Lol that is funny, there is no way anymore for a dictatorship to impose, the army is in their weaker point. Don't talk bs if you don't know, and the circle of dictatorship got broken in 2001 if no dictator come In power there now is not posible anymore. Anyway you are a little to paranoid if you didn't take the residency because of that lol

Please explain how it would have been the biggest mistake? Residency does not = citizenship. Also most expats on here seem to be thriving on selling dollars, not buying, so I also don't see how residency would have affected anything with the dollars situation...

What makes you think you need a military to a have dictatorship or that style of a governement?

There are far more affordable solutions in the current state of these South American countries. Just look south to Venzuella! Its starting to look like looking in a mirror between Argentina and Venzuela.

Why deal with the expense of a military and the social plans, when you can accomplish the same thing with just social plans and garner a majority vote thru ignorant and poor sectors of the population that will vote based on their perceived benefits, free sustenance and a belief that they are entitled only because they exist.

While I do believe in social programs and assistance for the poor I do not believe it should be a tool for politics which is really nothing more than another form of corruption.. I will end this topic here.

So you cannot buy dollars! Looking in the mirror!

Your inflation is off the charts! Looking in the mirror again!

Businesses are being stolen from corportations by the government! Looking in the mirror again!

Crime is of the charts! Looking in the mirror yet again!

Oh and God forbid anyone publish accurate ecomic data that is a criminal act!

" If it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck and walks like a duck, it's a duck"

Shall I continue..

So why would anyone want to be a resident in that mess? Unless I was planning on hooking up with a social program.

With all this painful reality, that we all seem to joke about and or ignore. There is one fact that is sure, all the above mentioned reality is going to result in further, possibly extreme deterioration. IMHO I believe Argentina will become Argcubezuela and I would much rather be settled in comfortably in another local then having to uproot and bail in midst of such a situation.

And what is your point? what is the problem with having a second nationality or a residency in any of this cases? sorry but what you say dosn't make any sense. Is not that i don't agree that this government is terrible, and that is manipulating the people with social plans but that just have 0 relationship with having a residency and the benefit of having it again just been as a illegal turist. Don't mix potatos with carrot unless you want to make a salad, :) if you do so not even your self will understand the words comming from your mouth, stick to the facts you are more vulnerable without a residency than with it in any of the cases, and you have more benefits. In any of the cases you can always get a plane and go back to your country.

That is one of the reasons for my position concerning residency. I would not want to buy a house, fill it with furniture, buy a car and all the necessities only to find myself in a situation where I would need to uproot because of another crisis or even live in the cycle of crisis situations every 10 years, more or less. Which I believe this time around might make the pervious crisis look like a stroll thru the park.
