Palermo Pet Supply Store

I did not create the "palermo" hyperlink, the website did, no idea why ?

I do cook chicken and rice for both of us at home. I think she can rough it for a few weeks, and the vet told me high quality kibble is better for her teeth.

Let em guess...the vet you saw here also sells food. Vets usually get into the business because they care about animals. But it's still a business and the subsidies from selling food at their offices are a huge financial boost for them. I'm not going to pull any punches: the quality of some of these brands, especially Royal Canin, Iams, etc, is awful. If a vet were to ever recommend any of these foods (which they do as they sell them in their offices), it's like having your human doctor recommend you eat McDonalds hamburgers as your primary food source.

There are enough chew options for a dog to keep it's teeth well. A bone, rawhide, certain toys, etc, all do the same job. And while it doesn't seem as regular a routine in BA, you should also be cleaning your dogs teeth twice a month. But that depends on the dog, your training savy, etc.

How a vet can claim that kibble is good for a dog's teeth is beyond me. Bones, real or made of e.g cowhide, now that's good for their teeth.

And I agree with Quinn on biased vets. It crossed the line of gone too far a long time ago.

Thanks for all the help Quinn. You really are dedicated to your dogs that is great. I am in the states still and I started her on Royal Canin Adult medium since it is available both in palermo and California. The ingredients of both the Argentina and US products are almost the same. Not great, but no wheat or soy, so adequate for a month or two.

The vet was american and recommended hills prescription TD. the ingredients are better than royal canin and I use them for treats but do not have room to bring many to argentina. She chews a nylabone as rawhide causes stomach problems. We are going to visit tomorrow so I will ask about this again. Also she gets an annual cleaning under anesthesia so her teeth are in good shape, although I know keeping her asleep with the drugs during the procedure is not ideal.

Once I find a rice cooker, I will make sure she gets carrots and rice and chicken also several times a week, but everyday is not realistic.

thanks.

Regarding rice cooker, I bought mine at a bazar at the corner of Arenales and Ayacucho. I have seen rice cookers at chinatown too.

You don't really need a rice cooker for doggie rice. Just boil it in water like you would pasta then drain it. Not ideal for people but my dog has never complained. :)

Quinn, just curious, what brought you to the conclusion that Royal Canin was bad?

I've used it for many years (opted for cheaper now but I have 4+1+2 dogs to feed and potentially 2 more = total of 9) and I consider it a medium/superior quality like Purina and so on.

I'm a rice eater too, thanks for the tip Roxana !

Her primary kibble in the US is Bench and Field Holistic Natural:
http://www.benchandfield.com/product_info.php?cPath=45&products_id=733

It is about 13.00 at trader joes, the exact same price I paid for the 6 lb bag of adult medium royal canin.

The 2kg royal canin is 37 pesos at kuala pet in palermo, so it is cheaper in Argentina.

They both have the same protein sources but the Holistic Natural I buy has some other good stuff acidophilus, fruits, vegetables, kelp, omega3 omega6. flaxseed which I like. People comment she has a very soft coat and she is 8 yrs old. whereas the Royal Canin does not have the extra added nutrients, the vitamin are synthetic form.

Keep in mind both have fish oil which goes rancid quickly especially if the bag is left open so try to only buy what you will use in a month or so. Also they date the bags with the manufacture date here home which I like.

One other thing I was quoted 20 pesos for a vial of frontline today in Palermo on the phone, it is 15-20usd at home, so a dramatic savings in BsAs. I will stock up !

INGREDIENTES

Commercial dog food contains by product of meat, not actual meat. And wouldn't surprise me if it contains by products from sick animals not fit for human consumption.

The ideal thing would probably be giving your dog a real bone to chew on, or something similar. Cleaning your dogs teeth under anesthesia should be the last option in my opinion, because it causes unnecessary stress for the dog and it's costing you money for no good reason.
If I were you I'd get a second opinion from a holistic veterinarian.
