Was anyone else pleasantly awaken at 7:00 this AM by the banging of drums and fireworks going off in Palermo? I tell you what, there's nothing I like more than being woken up to the chant of derechos humanos and the banging of drums in the morning. Gets my blood pumpin!

I live on the 35th floor of a building in Palermo Hollywood and this shit woke me up, I could only imagine what it was like for folks over towards Plaza Serrano. I also can't believe these Indians that set up shop right in the middle of 9 de Julio. haha It's so unbelievable that it's funny...

yeah but unlike many other piquetes this one at least seems justified. as far as I understood, their state indeed ignores some of their rights and the government does not act, so they don't really have other options. Go to court about it? AFAIK they did and won, did not help them much though. Bring them some empanadas, at least for those who are not on hunger strike.

I take it you have been in the country that long -- must have missed the thousands of people that took over public land at Christmas time and refused to leave until they got their payout.... and then poof! magically disappeared within hours, if not minutes of the agreement to pay up was signed.

Sadly, these natives have been protesting on the boulevards of the avenue, where they do not cause any inconveniences with the traffic, etc for 4 months and have been totally ignored by the authorities, now that they are on a piquete they make the news, etc. This sets an awful example on what type of protests are effective in reality. The natives were by far more civil than any unionized protest, and were absolutely ignored ... food for thought.
