I asked here in Recoleta and was given a dirty look...

For a young person living at home with their parents earning $1100, their lifestyle and future prospects has undoubtedly seen a massive boost
I disagree. When I came here just 2.5 years ago, I hired a young single guy freelance hourly for random things I needed. I was paying $10 an hour adjusted weekly with the blue and he was beyond thrilled - he was making more than all his friends.

6 months ago, I was already raising him to $18 an hour and he quit. He said that costs are so high that he has less money left over making $18 now than he used to have 2 years ago when I paid him $10.

And he’s right. Look at anything - a Starbucks latte, as a random item. It was $2 two years ago and is $5+ now.

No "massive boost" nothing.

Working an eight hour day five days per week he would comfortably be an upper middle class household on his own.

Yeah sure but nobody pays such rates for a full time job, at $20 an hour that would be $3200 a month

If your housing costs are zero as in my example, living at home with parents or in free accomodation (e.g. apartment inherited from grandma), then a $2 Starbucks latte with $500 or a $5 Starbucks latte with $1100 is rather moot. And while $500 or $1100 might buy a Starbucks, it will never afford foreign travel or serious purchases such as a home of ones own, a car or electronics like an iPhone which generally have international / dolarized prices.

Each case is different. In the past year I have hired 4 young Argentines who have returned from Europe because wages are "better" in Argentina for their line of work (and presumably that equates to more disposable income in their pockets as a result of various economic factors beyond the paycheck, such as taxation, accomodation costs, family support etc...) even if a visit to the supermarket here costs twice as much. Do they represent every worker's personal situation and job? No, but no economy can be summarized using individual cases and no individual can be summarized by looking at averages... but if the wheels keep turning then something is obviously working for enough people until they stop turning when it is obvious they don't work for enough people.
