I received the following note from a friend in BA;

"I need to get a notarized and apostilled "letter of income". I have the letter from the soc sec admin, but I can not find out where to get it apostilled. The soc sec admin are not being helpful. Do I have to mail it to the US Dept of State i Washington office that does apostilles on Federal docs, or is there any easier place to do it? Any ideas on who to ask?"

I'm too young to know the answer.:D

I think this depends on who is issuing the letter. When i had to get a notarized/apostilled letter of income, I had the letter notarized in the state of NV, sent to the Secretary of State to be apostilled. If this is from the social security administration, I would imagine yes it would need to be sent to the Dept of State in DC for apostille, but maybe the secretary of state in the issuing state can do it. Your friend needs to make some phone calls to make sure.

My friend received this message from the US Embassy:

"I got another response from the US Embassy about my apostille question this morning. Could be bogus of course, but the email from the US Embassy says, "Ministry of Foreign Affairs" is at: Arenales 819, Capital Federal. You have to take the letter and request the HABILITACION of that note" This sounds wrong, that an Ar government agency will guaranty the signature of a US gov doc."

Has anyone out there tried this?

I believe all documents to be apostilled must go through the Secretary of State. Regarding being notorized...the Notary must be on the list at the Secretary of States office. So you may want to inquire before. It might be best to recruit a friend in NV to walk through the process for you. Very difficult to do from here. Good luck!

Here's the answer:

The Social Security office at the US Embassy in BA has direct access to the Social Security database. It only takes a few minutes to access and print the required document (in Spanish so no translation required) which then must be signed by an embassy official. An advance appointment may be required.

Then the document can receive the HABILITACION at 819 Arenales.
