As an American citizen who lives in Buenos Aires, not in the United States, I'm wondering how to go about getting a REAL ID document, since this will be eventually needed for travel in the U.S.....?

REAL ID (This is from the California BMV):

Starting October 1, 2020, you will need to show federally-compliant ID in order to board a domestic flight within the U.S. and enter secure federal facilities, such as military bases, federal courthouses, and other secure federal locations.

"Federally-compliant documentation" can be any of the following:

• Passport (or Passport Card)
• U.S. Department of Defense ID
• DHS Trusted Traveler Card
• Permanent Residence Card (Green Card)
• Enhanced Driver License
• Federally-recognized Tribal-issued Photo ID

Comment: Eventually everyone will have converted their driver's license (or non-driving ID equivalent) to the "enhanced version," but until something like that is obtained, a passport suffices and the occasions to use it are limited. Can the US Embassy in BA provide a non-driver ID card? It would be interesting to ask.

Your passport is a real ID. Your US driver's license is also one unless you're from the handful of states that couldn't get it together in time.

Only the passport is recognize outside the US. All the other IDs are recognize by the US inside its territory. You cannot board an airplane in Argentina with nothing different than a passport.

If for some reason it is difficult to get a real ID from your state, a passport card fits comfortably in your wallet, is valid as a Real ID, and can be used to enter by land or sea to Canada, Mexico, and several beautiful island countries.
