Hi everyone,

My boyfriend and I are planning to move from Canada to BA for six months in November and work from there as freelancers for a new adventure.

I would like to know if we could rent a place in pesos?

So far, I can only find places where the rent is in US dollars. Is it only because the research on Internet target the tourists? Could we find a place to rent in pesos once we are in BA?

I have read about the US dollar restrictions going on and I am getting confused. If we have to pay rent in US dollars, how can we get US dollars?

Is there a bank in Canada that could be linked to a bank in Argentina to make easier transactions?

If you have any advice or tips that would be greatly appreciated:)

You can find a place to rent for pesos, but it isn't easy for a newcomer. And yes, the internet is heavily slanted to the tourist/newcomer category.

If you know any locals at all, they may be able to steer you towards a peso apartment. Then again, maybe not.

No worries Boudika. You just need to hook-up with someone who can do your wire transfer (always private individuals or cuevas, never banks). You can get dollars just fine in Argentina.

The fact that you are foreigners and you are able to pay with USD means you will be able to negotiate yourself a great rate.

Cuevas are also called casas de cambio/change houses (though not all [or even most] casas de cambio are cuevas, probably). They usually are places where people trade in currencies. Some are a little more official than others. For example, the one I go to is a nearly empty apartment with a couple of nearly empty desks and a couple of phones. One I've gone to in the past was an official change house where people went to change money and upstairs they had about 25 computer stations with monitors above them where people were buying and selling currency all the time.

The problem with cuevas is that you have to know someone who is already a customer to get a referral before they will trust you to send money to give you here. With the currency controls the government has put into place, AFIP is looking to cause these places problems.

I am currently in the process of trying to rent an apartment in pesos (short term foreigner rental) and whilst the agents have managed to find some landlords willing to do business, it is severely restricting my choice.

The problem is that you are doing a short-term foreign rental. If you were to rent a regular apartment with a local guarantee there would be no problem finding a place in pesos (and it would be cheaper too).

Your problem will be that you are paying expat prices. Like el expatriado said, if you have a garantia and are signing a long-term contract then you can rent like a local for much cheaper. Check out these links to give you an idea of "local" prices vs the price you are being asked to pay.

This is a site that is (supposed to be) direct rents with apartment owners but occassionaly you'll find an inmobilaria trolling here.

Good luck!
