Shipping One's Own Art Out Of The Country

I brought about 30 of my own paintings from Italy by detaching the canvas from the frame (staple remover) and rolling them up, paint side out. I packed them in my checked luggage. You will have to stretch them again when you arrive to your destination. if your paintings can't be rolled (ie they are on wood) then you will have to ship them separately, hopefully using the advice that others gave already. Well, a few things.

- First, you're going to face an issue if you try to get 100 paintings (even painted by your partner) out of the country using the conventional method. If I recall, an individual is allowed to export annually just ONE work of art/antique. If you export more you'll need to register yourself as an exporter (and yop, that's where the fun begins).

Furthermore, it's likely that in order to register as an exporter, you'll need a CUIT/CUIL, what means if you are here on a tourist visa, that will be impossible.

- Taxes: They are paid directly at Banco Ciudad if I recall (5% of the value, also if I recall) based on their own estimates (in your case, nada/zilch).

In 2008 I was able to get an "export license" for over 30 paintings using my passport. I took them to the USA in two boxes as checked luggage. I paid the "apprasial tax" at the Banco Ciudad and went to arte visuales and the secretaty of culture to do the appropriate paperwork.

It was necessary to take all of the paperwork to the aduana building outside of the main terminal the day prior to the flight and then to aduana office inside the terminal prior to check in for a spot check of the inventory (so don't seal the boxes prior to this step).

Fortunately, my lovely friend Patricia was with me at each step and she did all of the talking. She is the woman who has helped several members of the forum at migraciones.

Don't forget that you need 2 photos of each painting with the artist's name, the type of painting ("oleo sobre tela" in Lee's partner's case), and the dimensions written on the back of each photo in the upper left corner as follows:

Autor: Lee's partners name.
Medidas: height x width in cm.
Procdimiento: Oleo sobre tela.

I had also "heard" that I could only do thie once a year, but I was told by the aduana that isn't true.

I didn't even show them my passport and they didn't ask to see it. I only provided a photocopy of the page with my photo and other details. I did not include the page with my entry stamp. Apparently to them that was a question for migraciones.
