Shooting in Palermo has me thinking...

There was a post not long ago by someone on this forum who was held up at knife point right outside the American embassy.

You have to be careful in Buenos Aires - everywhere. There are good neighborhoods where you're relatively safe, but you have to be aware of your surroundings all the time. Not paranoid, but at least vigilant.

This particular shooting in Palermo was the typical shooting/stabbing that happens as young drunk people leave night clubs early in the morning. It happens often enough in the poorer neighborhoods, though I suppose this one made the news because of the location and because the man was left paralyzed.

Manhattan was dangerous in the 1950-1970 era? More so than Palermo today? I beg to differ. Are you talking about the other boroughs?

i lived in manhattan in the 1970's (and i still do today, when i'm not in BA) and yes, while i loved the city then almost more than i do now (it was the real thing) it was definitely more dangerous than palermo is today, no question.

btw, i have a house in palermo soho, and i love living in that neighborhood.

i agree with what others suggested above, 6 am is the time when whoever is out on the street on a weekend is usually blind drunk and gets into all kinds of trouble. this also happens in recoleta a lot.

I said NYC, not Manhattan. I actually lived in the North Bronx and Brooklyn. But in the 50's and 60's many parts of Manhattan were dangerous, upper West Side, Harlem, etc. Not that any of this matters.

Buenos Aires has the second-lowest homicide rate among the large cities of the world. It ranks just below Toronto (which has the lowest) and above New York (homocides have come 'way down in NYC). When compared to other South American cities in Brazil and Colombia say, it is no contest. BA is relatively safe. It does have its petty larcenies and such. I believe this morning's shooting in Palermo (hopefully, the guy will survive) is not indicative of life here and especially not Palermo Soho.

That said, you are never completely safe anywhere. Jenna Bush had her purse stolen about four years ago at a hotel restaurant (was it the Sheraton?) while she was surrounded by secret-service agents.

I thought she was at a parrilla in San Telmo when her bag got swiped.

I know it happened, but, how it was even possible? I mean, it was the daughter of the POTUS at the time. Those guys that stole her bag should be recruited by the Secret Service then.

puerto madero is a gated community. it could be anywhere. bland but safe.
