Sign That My House is Going to be Robbed?

I personally don't think it's a lot to worry about however please be vigilant. While gang culture is not yet prevalent here in Capital Federal and Gran Buenos Aires, things are all global now so don't let your guard down. And just a side note, fellow expats, this a woman with a child we are responding to so let's show a little bit of solidarity here and not poke fun and make dumb comments about her concerns. If something potentially seemed scary to your mom, sister, aunt, etc, you probably wouldn't laugh. Keep the jokes for other issues that don't play with peoples sense of security. It can be very scary, trust me I know, I've had a gun pointed at me here.......
Thanks, I appreciate it.

I apologize for my flippant response. Take care. I couldn't pass up an opportunity to take a dig at Rick.

Hola Sheawj,

I personally would not be too worried about the tag near your door. That looks to me more like some young street kid tagging his handle on a poorly chosen place. However, If you feel confident enough I would advise arming yourself, at then house only, with a can of pepper spray and a baseball bat. IF YOU FEEL COMFORTABLE ENOUGH. Or, if you do live in a house and not an apartment maybe look into security cameras, that will be enough to scare anyone off. Good luck!

Saludos!

No worries.
I may have only been on this forum (and Bs As, for that matter) for only a year, but I am not new to forums in general. If someone new (aka 'Fresh Meat') asks a stupid question, frequently the more established members will dogpile and poke fun. I have gotten a lot of good advice and encouragement here, so the helpful stuff has far outweighed the asshattery!

And actually, your comment wasn't thaaaat bad. :)

Hey, the security cameras are a really good idea!
And I agree, it is probably nothing. I guess what rattled me was it's cramped, odd location, and how I have never seen that particular mark before.
I also have been involved with more crime these past eleven months than in my whole life combined (where I work was robbed in March, and the dudes returned to scope the place out again last month, my bus stop was swarmed by thugs that attempted to rob several us at once -unsuccessfully- in July, and these are just a few things that come to mind quickly), so I am always on high alert while trying to not stand out too much.
Having pepper spray is something I am ok with.

Again, I like the camera idea. I think that this has pushed me to reevaluate our front gate's security, in case I do see a mark that I can pinpoint as dangerous without a doubt.
We are in an ok neighborhood in the province, and the house is pretty nice...but I don't own it, and worry I look like some wealthy foreigner/easy target, when in fact I don't have much.

Don't persecute yourself too much, its not your fault. A lot of people use security cameras, I am not real sure where you can get them but that is my advise also I have seen pepper spray in some outdoor fishing supply stores and such. Sounds like you have had some horrible circumstances since you have been here but hold your head high hopefully the worst is past.

When you'll walk nearby your house, you can also try to find some similar tags :
- If there are other similar tags, with slight differences : watch out
- If there are other similar tags + they all look the same : it's some kind of signature, nothing to worry about.
- If there are none : likely nothing to worry about.

Got my camera from mercadolibre, apparently there's a special area for that sort of thing on the street Boulogne-sur-mer but not sure the altura. Maybe someone else knows...

You can also download a Prosegur sticker, print it and place it on your door (disuasion).

I'll be honest, having security cameras probably makes your house more of a target. It shows that you've got something that you want to protect. Even if what you are protecting is your family, the robbers might assume its money.

And how many times have we watched the news where people get robbed in sight of security cameras and then had the bad guys not be caught?
