Smart T V: Is It Worth It? 42" Versus 47"

Recently, I asked other members for opinions about 3D TV. I still haven't made a purchase, but this weekend Gabarino is offering a 42" LG Full HD TV for $6500 pesos with 12 interest free payments. It is not a "Smart TV and has a screen "refresh rate" of only 60 Hz.

The "sale" price is exactly the same a Rodo's regular price.

I would appreciate opinions from those who are familiar with Smart TVs and those who have compared 42" TVs to 47" TVs, as well as from anyone who lacks the self control required to keep from asking what Ayn would buy. :p

Steve-san, if you cherrish your dollar, spend a little more but buy "made-in-japan" brand..The Koreans and the Chinese made stuff albeit cheaper at first, they won't last as long as the much expensive Japanese makes. So at the end, you have to buy it again, If not buy the european brand at least. The G7 countries pay decent wages in order to build the quality products too.!

I have a smart TV (Sony). But I have maybe used the smart features once or twice. I had a spare desktop computer that I have permanently attached to the TV via HDMI. That's what I'm using to write here. Point is, smart tv is a marketing scam. It sucks. Apple tv is good but if you dont have that either then you can always hook up your desktop computer to it and make it smart. I would save your money and buy a dumb tv.

Hmmm,I commend you by having the taste to acquire the SONY brand. You are one person that knows quality despite the marque being much pricey than the others. But second the statement that "smart TV" not needed.
Every time Iam watching the Bio-science program and starnge phrases pops up, instead of going for the pad or smart phone to find definition, I way liking to be able to see it right on the big screen of the smart TV.! I right now still enjoying my SONY 1st HD LCD TV at whopping 70" in 1080i format enjoying the clear super HD image resolution and now in 2014 still functioning as designed. But may soon be acquiring the 4K smart TV at 85" and of course a SONY this time around too but it have to be with all the bell and whistles and "smart" a must !

Both Samsung and LG have a better reputation in Argentina than Sony. I saw Sony 42" LED TVs at Walmart this week for $8100...not exactly a premium price. If Sony was considered better than LG or Samsung here I would have chosen the brand.

I have a friend in Punta Alta who owns an electronics store and sells TV's on credit to locals with low incomes and gives them up to 200 cuotas to pay. He agrees that Samsung and LG are superior to Sony in Argentina and he doesn't want to repossess a TV when someone stops making payments because it died before the last payment was made.

If you had read through the thread you would have seen that I made the puchase of the LG prior to your post.

Thanks, anyway.

PS: In 2006 I bought a Philips 42" plasma made in Europe. It was an unrepairable piece of junk in less than three yeas.

Well, then too late for my warning to you but I did enjoy reading about your secluded house in the campo and cutting down on the fallen trees for wood burning and using its heat for your big house calefaction !
Whilst my recent stay in the frigid land of Hokkaido Japan, it seems everyone there goes one step ahead and compressing wood into chips or pellets and feeding it to burn and making a grandiose heating to keep humans warm in the sub freezing harsh winter of northern Japan.

The world is closer than ever to what she envisioned in 1957 when Atlas Shrugged was first published.

It is being engulfed by collectivism.

Ayn imagined problems that never existed, and prescribed solutions that never will.

This is an old view that if you asked someone in the 50s-60s about made in japan or hong kong they would say the same, piece of shit. Times have changed.

I've had a Chinese Huawei phone for 3 years now and a ZTE one for 2 years before that. The ZTE one is still going strong although its a bit out of date now, a decent backup and the Huawei is great.

Xiaomi are making some top quality fast mobiles never mind Lenovo who bought IBM's PC sector and is currently the largest PC maker in the world, They also recently bought Motorola off Google. I have an old Lenovo tablet that i still use regularly.

Sony has a habit of making propriety hardware (minidisk, bluray, betamax, ATRAC, MemoryStick, Digital Reader, UMD, DAT etc) that is overpriced compared to the standards and there is a good chance it will be incompatible with future stuff if you don't continue buying sony stuff.

Indeed, in the 1950s "Made in Japan" meant low quality.

It's been also the same for "Made in Germany" in the late 19th/early 20th century (low quality) so that the British importers would even sometimes erase this mention for marketing purposes. And when you recall that the Prussian uniforms even had to be supplied by the Brits during the Napoleon wars, what a journey they accomplished (one could explain the other too...).

I use the Smart TV since our friend gave us his Netflix password (obv Argy version doesn't have as good of a selection but hey, it's free for us) and that's all I use it for. I would go for Apple TV if I had the desire (and didn't care about how I spend my $)

Apple TV is pretty cheap if you get it anywhere but Argentina.
