So, is mate an acquired taste or is it possible I might like it?

definitely an acquired taste. but you can find yerba in the US, so you don't have to wait to try it here
Ahhh, but I'm saving myself for the ritual in Argentina! I'm sorry to hear I have to do it myself though and not buy like a coffee.
I don't live in the USA anymore. I live in Mexico now.

Back in 1977 I did a university paper on Argentina*, thus the latter half of
77 drank it often, brewed. [ to this day I wonder why the
bibliography at the end went from A-M or so with no authors about N
onwards... ]
* the subject of which escapes me.

Are you suggesting mate gets you high or am I missing something?

I grew up here and I could have some but I don't really like it. That's me.

No...
did paper which I forgot the subject of because HEY NO AUTHORS N OR AFTER was
at the time much more INTERESTING than the title or the subject...
As if I had done a paper on some Senate bill and no Senators voted Y OR N whose
surnames were N > Z inclusive...

Come to think of it, it probably included cultural anthropology data on
the Yahgan tribe of tierra del fuego, checking wikipedia: authors:
Koppers, Bridges, Darwin, Fitzroy, King,
