My sister-in-law had three of her classmates over today to do a group project for school. I found the project reasonably educational and it also brought back to me days long ago when I participated for a brief time in Junior Achievement in the States.

Two of the classmates are young ladies and the other is a young gentleman. They are extremely polite and well-behaved, quite unlike the majority of her classmates with whom I've had the rather dubious honor of hosting in my apartment on previous occasions. They are all a part of the Empresarial program of the school, which concentrates harder in preparations for business and law than general university preparation. There are actually only 5 students out of 60 in her level this year who took Empresarial. I'm not sure what happened to the 5th one - I'm not even acquainted with her. I know the other three who came very well, being her closest friends.

Their project was to come up with a food product to sell at school to make money for their graduation expenses next year. They have to worry about two main things for graduation: first, the graduation party and second, the senior field trip, on which they are hoping to travel to a resort in Brazil (I can never remember where - I'd never heard of it previously. Porto-something).

They had to prepare their recipes, detail the food and preparation costs, come up with a price at which to sell the products at a profit and prepare a detailed budget outlining all of this. Sometime in the next few weeks (one never knows when things will occur, exactly - the planning at this school, and one other she has attended, is usually very poor) they will be in charge of operating a booth at school for selling morning snacks and lunch offerings. They have a president, secretary and a treasurer as well as two "workers." My sister-in-law gets to be the treasurer.

They worked on their recipes today, and did quite well overall. I was a bit disappointed in their choice of offerings though - they were a bit typical without much innovation, being baked ham and cheese sandwiches with crust removed and quartered (white bread), as well as tomato, mozzarella and basil cheese sandwiches on whole wheat bread, crust-less and quartered as well. Ok, that last I was little surprised at and did actually have a bit of originality, but I can't actually imagine their classmates eating that one, even though I found them to be quite delicious. I haven't seen any of her friends EVER eat anything healthy and when I've tried to feed them something healthy, they've pretty much turned their collective noses up at my offerings :)

While they were working, they had come into my office and asked me for suggestions and help here and there. I let them use one of my computers to look up information on the internet, etc.

At one point they were all in my office taking a break and we were conversing about general themes. I don't remember what prompted the comment, but the young gentleman commented about the YPF theft Cristina is in the process of completing. He was quite angry about what was happening. In my opinion, he had the right idea.

One of the young ladies had asked him why the government shouldn't be doing exactly what they were doing. She wasn't baiting him, but really wanted to understand his take on things.

I absolutely loved the exchange. The guy had pretty much the details down correctly and was going into free trade discussions, the problems with government interventions, everything. I was really enjoying it.

They asked me what I thought about all this and of course I gave them my two cent's worth, which pretty much agreed with what the guy had to say.

Then the other young lady held up her hand, looked around in mock terror, and said "Shhhhhh...the government has recorders everywhere!"

We all busted up laughing. A nice day passed in the El Queso household.

A young citizen in the Argentine schooling system who is not brainwashed and is actually informed about what's going on. And not just that but can hold a discussion with El Queso! ;) That's awesome! Makes me feel better to think that there might be others who will at least try to make this country better in the future, if not now.
