Hi everyone,

I am about to start a PhD in Leeds, UK, maintenance and tuition fee covered by a scholarship from a charitable institution from Edinburgh.

Will I have to pay taxes? How does the tax thing work in UK?
I have no idea and it seems it'd represent a big difference to my wallet...

Thanks!

You won't have to pay any tax on a grant/scholarship (or related maintenance fees) but if the university employs you (to teach, for example) that wage will be taxed (automatically, without you having to do anything). If you do freelance work to subsidise your scholarship, you will be responsible for registering with the Inland revenue and paying your tax.
