The Finger

Regarding her comment about fearing God and her just a little, Clarin took the comment out of context, and made it seem as though she had said that for everyone in the country. In fact, had anyone actually watched her speech, she directed that comment to the people she has appointed in the government, e.g. her ministers. And clearly she never compared herself to God.

I don't think it's about political correctness. It's about manners. Again, there are valid criticisms of CFK and her administration. (Inflation being the biggest in my opinion, and she totally bombed yesterday when responding to that issue.) However, you can't expect someone to have a dialogue with a group of people that openly tell her to F-off, nor should we expect her to sit down with journalists who knowingly and willingly manipulate what she says.

I actually watched the speech, not just read the Clarin article. While not saying specifically that she is on a par with god, she did indeed make a loose comparison. Whether intended to be funny or serious (I think both), even if she was just talking about her ministers directly, given the apparent fact that she mostly has the courts and the congress under her power for the most part: do you really think the ministers were the only people she was referring to? Do you think elected officials and others that are not even in government didn't take that a bit as a warning as well, considering her actions?

As far as someone expecting a dialog with her - I think you missed my main point (easy to do perhaps - I tend to write too much, I know).

No one, particularly her opposition, feels like they have the slightest chance with dialog with her because of her actions, as if she is, mentally at least, thinking of herself on a par with god as far as her ruling this country goes.

In fact, many of the signs I have seen at various times that have been held up by protestors is that very specifically they do not feel it is possible to have a dialog with her.

Actions speak louder than words.

Polite? Yeah, that's about the only reason why I would have some hesitance about the bird-flipping, truthfully. I don't think she rates respect given the complete lack of respect she shows her opponents, but it can cause her opponents to appear to be on her same level.

Why do people think it's even the slightest bit important to try to keep some sort of dialogue going with Cristina?

I agree she's probably unreachable at this point. But she is not the only person Lanata is speaking to. He's also speaking to the society as a whole.

ElQueso said:
In my opinion (yeah I have one of those, too!), Cristina is extreme in what she's trying to do and doesn't care about how she does it, given her attitude and her very obvious support of corruption that benefits her.

I agree with you.

To me, saying one is not offended by the "finger" but doesn't like using that in a political battle such as we're seeing in Argentina today [...] well, it seems like something founded in political correctness to me.

I could be wrong about that. It could be that some people feel the debate should always be as friendly as possible, NO MATTER HOW the opposition approaches the debate.

This has nothing to do with "political correctness". Nor does it have anything to do with friendliness. Bienvenido Lanata's scorn. But it works better when it is articulate. The digit is not articulate.

Au contraire. The digit is quite articulate. Its just that he has only one thing to say. He says that one thing very well.

Haha. True, very true!

She said it very explicitly. I think you should watch the video again. And I assume you were watching the last question of tonight's Q&A at Harvard... It shocks me at how media illiterate the students at Harvard are.

At any rate, I did find some of her responses to the questions a bit uncomfortable. Some of them were demeaning. (Referring to one as "compañerito") I wish she were more responsive to the press, but then again, she has to put up with the constant manipulation of what she says. Again, I refer back to the constant manipulations that come from Grupo Clarin. The fear one is just a one among many.

He sure does!!

I just think that one thing he says so well is not productive right now. Or am I wrong?

The folks on "678" do not play Lily Allen songs and flip the bird.

.

678 plays an over the top nationalistic song and all of the pics of people from La Campora waiving their flags and ridiculously Pro-K pics. They are completely the other way, there's absolutely NO balance on their show either, so yes I think Argentine television does need a show that's from the entirely opposite side of things.

678 won't even invite anyone on there that expresses any opinion contra Cristina. DDD tampoco. DDD is becoming completely insoportable, especially the ridiculous "Dra" Mengolini who people seem to actually think has more than one brain cell.

There is no attempt at presenting any sort of balance, dialogue or debate on any of these shows, so I'm happy that there is at least now a Lanata show (even though there isn't room for dialogue with the opposite side on his show either).

I think it's childish and puerile.
It does 'the cause' no good whatsoever and merely drags the anti K faction to their level of gutter dog fighting.
Best leave it to the likes of that clown Moreno.
Let's face it, he does quite well in that dept with no outside assistance.
