Travel alone, dress nicely, hand baggage that looks like a suitcase. Then in high season you book a flight that has a connecting one in the same airport with a very short window, and that connecting flight has high demand. If you know for a fact that your first flight generally gets late to the connecting airport (read consumer complaints, for example), you know that the company must provide you with nice accomodation. If they have a spot in first and you have a frequent-flyer card (which is free) they can choose you for first class (you look nice with your small laptop briefcase, you are travelling alone, etc). And then, champagne.
Depends on how much the airline wants to spend on accomodation for those "stranded" travellers. Amazingly, over-booking certain flights seems to be a constant and included in the projections of the companies, because how else they could make the same mistake over and over again for the same route?
