The new Pope is American born Cardinal Robert Prevost. He is the first Pope elected from the United States. He will be known as Pope Leo.

Astonishing. He is fluent in Spanish and Italian. Spent 18 years in Peru, became a Peruvian citizen. Member of the Augustinian order, Mathematician. Native of Chicago. Reserved, not inclined to express views publicly but appears to be a 'centrist'.

I guess the initial optics are disapppointing,



with the ostentation recalling Benedict 2. Not Pope Francis in a simple cassock. His chosen name echoes Leo 13, who "outlined the rights of workers to a fair wage, safe working conditions, and the formation of trade unions, while affirming the rights to property and free enterprise, opposing both socialismand laissez-faire capitalism" (from Wikipedia), so there's hope I guess.

I would have preferred Cardinal Luis Tagle, and I always felt slightly cheated that Cardinal Jaime Sin never made it to Pope Sin. Just because.

I see no ostentation. I was moved by his speech and demeanor. The mocking lion photo is a disgrace.
