The pandemic: The view after 5 months

The statistical data pertains to the US. According to the article, how coronavirus numbers should be viewed can be applied to ARG.
Interesting that the positivity count in Argentina is still over 50% as I think I heard on the news the other night - a long, long way away from a 5% target...

IMHO because the virus kills only about 1% of people infected, virologists, medics, politicians or whoever promotes measures that reduce the income or life quality of people by 10-s% are overreacting. There should be some measures like wearing mouth masks or promoting social distance, but above all these measures should be limited. Though humanity has shown its collective incompetence by overreacting too much and staying in denial that taking drastic measures is not the way to go. I am sure that this opinion may be provocative to all those people who like to preach, yet I am voicing it, because all preachers are equally provoking people who just want life to go on and take things how they come. I am a grown up adult and I like to make decisions for myself, even if they are bad ones instead of being kept hostage by all kinds of measures.

I agree. I supported a super strict quarantine for months. I gave it a fair chance.

When it became apparent that it failed and that the virus is here to stay for a while longer and a strict extended quarantine is something with no end-game, my views changed to something more balanced where measures should be proportionate, effective and most of all give more space for personal responsibility and mitigation (just like other potentially dangerous activities sex, skydiving, sun bathing, eating fugu, hanging around with someone who has a flu etc.)

I still maintain that the government has a role to play in regulating dangerous behavior in public spaces and use of public spaces while being proactive about testing and implementing protocols to get back as many things to normal in a manageable way. For example I staunchly support limits on public transport, mandatory use of masks and protocols, keeping those who can work or study from home at home, prohibition of large gatherings without viable protocols, sensible restrictions on travel and circulation etc. I support the argument that health systems need to be protected to avoid overload while this is still something new that we are coming to terms with.

No government is Superman nor has control of anyone’s immune system, even though it creates a nice sales pitch to claim they do. By a government pretending that it is Superman, people risk getting a false sense of security where individual responsibility is less important “because there is X rule in place to keep me safe”. Human nature is that not everyone follows rules. The naïve and vulnerable then get sick and die as a result of failing to take basic precautions to keep themselves safe.

Humankind lived with TB (Something far more deadly than COVID) for how many years while continuing to live life and develop?

It also says to me that a team of mathematicians and statisticians should be on board to analyze data and apply mathematical and statistical techniques to assist the virologists, infectologists and related health experts when advising the decision makers what steps to take next.

Pero, we don’t like numbers here. Too much fact.

This whole thing screams to me selfishness on the part of politicians. They are completely ignoring the youth and children who are the most effected by these lockdown orders. Those with children will know how much of a nightmare this whole thing has been - kids being locked inside all day with no socialisation with other kids or access to hands on learning that schools provide. All to protect the elderly who have lived their lives. There have been no studies on the long term effects of this isolation on childrens developments and those who already suffer from mental health issues. The ages of 3-5 are the most important time for children to learn socialisation skills that stays with them for LIFE - those who skip this important step are likely to develop issues with others and how they behave. But the Government doesn't give a fuck because they are old and still receive their hefty salary while they sit on their ass telling us all how to live our lives. All the families I know with kids tell the same story - their children are stressed and struggling with being locked inside and not having access to play and seeing other kids.
