The Six-Thousanders Route is an adventure like no other

We drove from Fiambala up to the Hosteria at cortadera, which at 3300m/ 10,800ft was high enough for me. Its an awesome drive, with seis miles peaks on either side. Some of the people staying where we were staying hired guides and 4wd and went up to the balcon, at La Coipa. They were not feeling very well after that. too much altitude, not enough acclimation. Ruta 60 is a very beautiful drive, good road and little traffic, from Fiambala up. Incredibly striking landscape. Lots of vicuna and guancos wild along the road.

I’m in agreement on the altitudes ability to kick your butt!! Growing up ski racing was my sport, I was on Mt Hood three days a week as a teenager. So I thought that I was impervious to altitude sickness! But driving up Mejicana messed me up!! I guess it’s the extra 2-3000 feet of elevation, or maybe because I’m older, but I felt it!! My garmin said it was 14,549 foot elevation that day and it kicked my butt!

From Fiambala you can also go to the Balcon del Pissis at 4300 meters. I went there last year in winter and the landscape was surreal. I did not feel the altitude, probably because I only stayed for a few minutes as the temperature was well below 0 C and with a lot of wind. Definitely worth going there, and in summer it is even better.

the couple that went to Balcon came back with migraines and nosebleeds... but we, and they, were in our 60s. 4300 meters is worth acclimatizing to by taking it in stages, but of course, it depends on age, fitness, and individual health.
Regardless, its a very striking part of the country, and I enjoyed visiting it very much.
The hot springs at Fiambala, which do not require arctic gear or a young fit physique, are really wonderful.

I agree: the Fiambala hot springs are a lovely place. When I went there it was a day when the Zonda wind had just started blowing, but because they are nested in a small valley it was very pleasant. A note for whoever wants or plans to go to the hot springs: they are some 20 km outside of town but you have to purchase entrance in an office located near the main square.
