The times I flew to USA(last time last month) I didn't see any Americans who got a problem with getting into the country.
It must be that you liked looked suspicous because you didnt look as an tipical tourist.
 
I had a round trip ticket originating in Argentina. I've done the same for years. No tourist visas are required for Argentina. Why after years of travel did the airline rep. insist on proof of residence in Argentina. I assume the airline personnel act on policies that are set in accordance to US law.
 
Maybe they want to know the residence of every American citizen?
