Does anyone use a translator device, and can you provide a recommendation for a brand? I'm talking about a handheld device that is not a phone app, that will record your speech and play it back in Spanish? One that also will translate English into Spanish and show the text on the screen of what needs to be said, and possibly allow for scanning words to translate? One that will work without an Internet connection.

I have tried, over the years, at least 5 of them...they all are crap for various reasons. Using your phone with Google translate is good technically but the issue is having to hold a device out in the open that can get stolen as you use it. Better to buy a cheap phone and use Google translate...in my opinion.

We are not there yet. It has to do speech-to-text, translation, and text-to-speech at the same time at a decent speed. These are three different models. And it has to work without the internet, have a screen, and be portable.

Well, a gaming laptop with a decent NVIDIA graphics card might manage if you’re willing to install three different models and pipe text, data, and sound between them.

I guess ChatGPT can do all that, but it’s an internet app on a phone.

There's plenty of apps that do various forms of this and can run offline. I wouldn't bother trying to use something that's not a phone. Apps require constant updates to improve functionality and remove bugs.
