Hi everyone! I just landed in BA this morning from Wisconsin. I am in the Recoleta area for the next 6 months.

Two questions:
Which is better to use? Uber or taxi?
Reputable places in the area to exchange currency?

Thank you!

For a short distance (within CABA), when you want a taxi now, taxis are better because they're usually everywhere.

For a longer distance, or going outside CABA (e.g. San Fernando), and if you don't mind waiting 5-10 minutes for it, Uber is better. Tip: add "Cash" as a payment method and pay cash, and you'll get fewer cancellations (some drivers only want cash).

Someone from Recoleta can probably give you a nearby cueva (to exchange money), although they might prefer to give it to you in person rather than on the forum.

Wisconsin sounds cold.

This is an official casa de cambio:

Cueva rates may be better, not sure as i'm not really in the loop...

Probably others in the forum can advise.

Good Luck!

1. Uber - taxis are too hit and miss, high chance you get ripped off when they detect your gringo.

Uber for me all the way! Always have had a great experience (95%)

And generally much less expensive ...

Get a Sube card, download one of the bus/subte apps that tells you which number to take, and take collectivos. (buses) very cheap, very safe, every 15 minutes pretty much 24/7. I have taken buses home from clubs at 4 in the morning, which are full of single women, ranging from 15 to 65, its nothing like a big city in the USA. Me, I take taxis when I need to, and, in hundreds, probably thousands, of rides since 2007, have never had a taxi driver try to cheat me. But in the words of Bob Dylan, I cant help it if I'm lucky...

Agree with Ries about taking the bus/subte. That's my first choice if it can get me there within 30 minutes. Figuring out which bus/subte to take is easy using one of these:

1. Google Maps (https://www.google.com/maps) - just enter where you're going and choose the public transit icon (looks like a bus)

2. Como Llego on the web (https://mapa.buenosaires.gob.ar/) - a little more clunky than Google Maps, but sometimes it gives more bus options.

3. Como Llego iPhone or Android app (http://www.buenosaires.gob.ar/aplicacionesmoviles/ba-como-llego) - same as #2 above, but it's an app. iOS and Android links at the bottom of this page.

My cueva is at 38.2, buying dollars and selling me pesos. My bank is at 36. I'm not sure about casa de cambio. If you live in Centro and have more than $1K US to change, my cueva delivers.

If I can help, PM me.
