I have been in BA one month thus far I have been followed, videoed, was with a friend when her camera was stolen, I’ve seen a person robbed at gun point, I "dropped" out of a spanish class, and I am living in a room that could fit into my bathroom back in the states. Things are definitely staying interesting and I am so glad I came but I think I might need a to change my surrondings for a month. So, I am thinking about going on a vacation away from BA in December or January? If anyone could give me some suggestions on on a place that I could possible relax but still be able to continue my language studies and is reasonably priced? That would be awesome!

Thanks in advance!!!!

December-thru-February are the best months to visit Punta del Este in Uruguay. Despite being just across the river, it´s a different country and a great get-away from BA, during the summer heat. Punta is virtually a ghost-town the rest of the year, so I´d go for Uruguay, for the time-frame you mentioned.

I would agree with the first poster on Punta, although I don't think it would be all that reasonable in December or January. Based on your description of your current deluxe accommodations it may be out of your price range. Bariloche would certainly be nice as well but again I'm not sure about the cost. Also remember it's a long distance so you have to factor in travel costs. You might want to consider Rosario or Cordoba as well. These are two smaller cities in Argentina, smaller but nice and my guess is a bit less expensive than B.A.. Another lower cost choice might be Montevideo, it cheaper than B.A., on the ocean, and Uruguay as a whole has less crime although I'm not intimately familar with crime there.

The last time I was in Montevideo (about a year ago) it was NOT cheaper then BsAs, and with the Uruguayan peso strengthening it was actually maybe even a little more expensive.

My dos centavoes...

Agreed. Uruguay is more expensive than Argentina and Punta del Este in the summer is crazy expensive. Every bit as expensive as a comparable beach/vacation/see-and-be-seen place in the US like, say, Miami.

Well read it and weep. According to Mercer 2009 cost of living data by city, B.A. ranks 112th world wide and Montevideo is 131. B.A. is more expensive. In fact B.A. jumped from 138 last year to 112 this year. The reason is the high rate of inflation.

The Mercer data by city is in the link below.
