Can someone tell me how to get $ US to Argentina for pick up in Buenos Aires? Funds need to be received as $US. Is this possible?

If you need to get your hands on U$D you can take the ferry over to Montevideo, Uruguay and go to one of the local casinos.
I did it myself this year just to see if I could do it. I got $100 using my Amex card on the ATM machine inside the casino.
Montevideo has 2 casinos one downtown near Plaza Cagancha and the other one on the 18 Julio Avenue.
They have casinos here in BA near Puerto Madero, so this transaction may be possible to do it here too.

Sorry the downtown casino is near Plaza Independencia near the old section of the city. That’s the one I went to.
The other casino is near Plaza Cagancha.

Open a US dollar account at your argentina bank. Send an international wire transfer to that bank, specify not to convert to pesos. You should discuss with the banks Commercial Exterior department to be sure the processing is done correctly without delay.

Based off what I remember from your previous posts, I need to ask if you planning to pick up the dollar’s yourself, or tying to pay someone else? If paying someone else, you should pause to consider or ask if that person really must have USD. Be cautious since it could be someone taking advantage of you. If they are legitimate, they could just as easily send you an online payment coupon that would allow you to use your own foreign debit of credit card to make a payment. …That said, Once you have USD in your account, you can then do a domestic transfer to any other persons usd account, using the banks website or phone app, which is now very common. Again, be very cautious If someone tells you they cannot receive a domestic USD transfer and only take cash.

Thankfully this is a dear friend of ours who has been immensely helpful and we owe her money. Can you tell me what an online payment coupon is? She is not savvy with technology AT ALL (she is in her late 60's and not super comfortable with this type of thing). Can you open a $US bank account in Argentina online?

If this is just a person without a business, they will not be able to create a payment coupon the way I described. The best advice is what many here have said, which is to use Western Union, or MoneyGram, or Xoom, and have your friend pickup the cash in person at a Western Union (or MoreMoney office in the case of Xoom) location. There is years of feedback here in the forums about this technique. Someone else here might be able to tell you the most popular WU office if you mention your friends neighborhood.
If they do not want to carry that cash out of the office, then the WU person can transfer it to their CBU/CVU bank account number for a fee (maybe 1%). Secondly, as also mentioned here, those services can send direct to a persons bank account. I know you tried with Wise, but these others services work a bit differently and cater to this “family assistance” type of transfer. Perhaps if it is a large amount it will get questioned. Also they will tell you that on or around the 3rd transfer your friend will need to fill out additional paperwork online. If you open a WU account online, initiate the transfer, and then go to your local WU (at the supermarket or pharmacy) you can give cash and save a lot on the fee and have confidence in the paperwork they give you. All this advise is assuming you are physically located in USA.

Can you open a $US bank account in Argentina online?
I think I created a bna account online, or not. But you will not be able without a DNI. maybe with a tax id for non-resident CDI. Probably not feasible in your case. My original thought was that you have control of your mothers Argentina bank accounts. If she did not have a dollar account, you might be able to add one easy. They now are common. and that is where you should send a SWIFT wire transfer.

Looks like the currency is just fluctuating in the 1400 range to the USD. Closed at 1480 today, which is where it closed on the 26th. WU looking decent at about 1490. Might do a WU transfer tonight before it probably drops tomorrow.

Related question is there an actual ferry from BA to Montevideo or is it a ferry to Colonia then they take you to Montevideo in a bus?
