I have visitors (again!) and this time I am dealing with my uncle and aunt, both around 70 years old. They want to spend some day at the beach, and we explained them the ins and outs (mostly outs) of the concept "beach" in Argentina. I showed them the Rio de La Plata river and they asked me if in Punta del Este the water is the same color. They read wonderful stuff about Punta del Este on their Lonely Planet guide, and keep mentioning it. I have read many reports from other expats about Punta, and tried to keep them with their feet on the ground, but after all I have never been there!

Well, where the water is blue?

I think the closest true and consistent blue sea water they will find while in Argentina is southern Bahia, Brazil. Might get lucky in Bombinhas, Santa Catarina, if you arrive on a good day. I doubt that you will find any blue water south of that.

I went to a blue water beach today, with lake water. But that is on a good day. One could have a month of bad days as well.

Villa la Angostura has some beautiful beaches with wonderful lakes. Just throwing it out there.

In Uruguay, a few kilometers from Montevideo the water starts blue, even some times, lots of times, the water is blue in Montevideo. But the official limit of the Rio de la Plata is exactly Punta del Este. Of course the water is blue waaaay before. Although its not caribbean blue, its colder, and in february, with jellyfishes!!

In Argentina the water is dirtier, the sediments of the Rio de la Plata come more to this side, its brown, and you have to go south a lot. The water is very cold, obviously colder than in Uruguay and the sand is a lot more dark. But Mar del Plata and Carilo are decent blue.

Both Uruguay and Argentina cant compare with Brazil, although I like Uruguays beach for other issues, such as safety.

This photo shows exactly what I say, Montevideo is the limit for blue water

I've been to Punta del Este in all seasons and I would never describe the water as truly blue. Better than Argentina, but nothing like those photos!

The water in Punta isnt too great! If they have tons of money , they can fly there for a one nights stay! otherwise via boat and bus it will take them about 7-8 hrs each way a long way for some water in my estimation!
