Ok, I've seen a lot of posts about the iPhone 4 and unlocking, etc. But...WHO is actually using a NEW iPhone 4 (bought abroad) with a local carrier (claro, movistar, etc)

We have a phone we bought in the US about 1 month ago. It is jail broken and unlocked but it does not recognize the Claro SIM or service.

So, for those actually using the phone, what service are you using??

Not really answering directly your question but it might answer it though.
I use since almost two years a data unlimited plan with Clario/iPhone 3G and I'll change it soon for a 4.
I'm almost sure (not absolutely) that the provider needs to habilitate your IMEI.

If you don't use a data plan, beware of the "push notifications" and other functions working in the background (will eat 10/20 pesos per day of useless data). They can be desactivated (aside of the push menu), just ask how (don't remember the name of the app right now).

Thanks! Hadn't thought about the IMEI. I use Blackberry and when I change the phone, it just automatically updates the IMEI with the network...guessing iPhone's don't do that??

I'll give it a try and see what happens.

Apart from that, your SIM has to be activated in general. I use an Android phone with personal telecom and I had to dial some special number they gave me when I bought the chip. Had to call there, tell them an eternally long serial number of the SIM chip, my name+adress+passport number, etc.
Then, like a day later or so, my chip was active and I was able to use my line.
I'd advise you to look which data packages Claro offers. Deactivating push and only going online where you have WiFi is good, having internet wherever you go is better. I live in province and look up the state of traffic before going home from the capital (blocked roads etc.), look up directions, etc., much more useful than at home where you know all that stuff anyway.

We have two Canadian, factory-unlocked, iPhone 4. Using them with Claro right now without problems. One has an unlimited data plan, the other does not. I had to cut the old Claro SIMs to micro-SIM size with scissors, as Claro told us they are not switching SIMs for micro-SIMs yet. Overall it was pretty easy to do, but you have to make sure you cut the SIM right, otherwise it will not work.
