Why citizenship?

Another reason to have Argentine citizenship is if you’re planning to live here for an extended time. As a Swedish citizen my passport is only valid 5 years at a time and I don’t go there every four years to renew it. It can be costly and difficult to renew a foreign passport if you don’t live in Buenos Aires.

And a personal reason for me was that I couldn’t work in the public school system without citizenship. Later on I decided to work in the private system anyways because of post COVID students.

Much more time initially in Thailand than with a USA passport. At least that was the case a few years ago.

Argentinians get a 90-day tourist entry which only 5 countries in the world get...
Right now (it changes very frequently) a us citizen gets a 60-day entry with the ability to get a 30-day extension. I do not know if an Argentine can get an extension or not.

You see the differences when you are in troubles. If you are accused of a crime, even found innocent, you get a deportation order because permanent residency in reality means permanently deportable. If you are accused, you wait the trial in jail while citizens waits for it at home. Today is very common to have fake accusations from women who puts you in a very complicated situation. As a citizen you can change your gender no questions asked and get a not guilty verdict because there are many crimes that can be committed by men only. Argentina does not extradite its citizens who have the privilege of being judged by local judges. Argentina neither repatriate deserters in case of massive conscription in your born country. If you need a transplant, like liver, citizens have priority. Today with DNU 366 the differences are stronger because permanent residency refers to the mandatory address of someone in parole (POW rules) while free people have only address, because they can live where they want. The most important privilege of citizens is immigration agents have no jurisdiction on you because you have the right to civil Courts. This is particularly true when you have conflicts with your landlord. The debate between if is it is better to be free or a serf (white slavery) is hilarious.

I naturalized for a few reasons:

- I've spent basically half of my adulthood in Argentina, and nearly a quarter of my life overall
- I don't ever plan on ever moving outside of South America, so it's great for the freedom of movement with Brazil, which has no time limit, and Mercosur, which has 5 years post-naturalization (Panama is also ascending to Mercosur too, so another country added to the list)
- I was afraid of potential changes to migratory laws that Milei ultimately made (even if they're eventually ruled unconstitutional like Macri's)
- I wanted to have the ability to come and go without worrying about timelines/need to renew my residency
- I have visa free access to Belarus, Brazil, China, Iran, Russia, and Venezuela now
- I wanted to be able to chose which political party robs me, at all levels

And perhaps most importantly, Argentina has become my home, and while I don't reside in it now, it's very likely in the future I will return, where the same can't be said for where I was born.

As a long time permanent resident living on my savings and Social Security allowance, what possible advantage would I enjoy by becoming an Argentine citizen? And Happy New Year to all..

One point worth flagging is that permanent residency is not irrevocable. It can be revoked if you spend extended periods outside Argentina, fail to meet residency requirements, or if your status is later questioned on formal grounds. Citizenship, by contrast, is permanent and unconditional. Beyond that, citizenship gives you full political rights, an Argentine passport, and removes any long-term uncertainty about renewals or compliance reviews.
