    First Post…first Question

Hi toconn, welcome to the forum. :) I work 100% remotely also (also in IT), and it's doable, but you'll need to plan a little. I don't find the bandwidth issues to be such a big restriction. It can sometimes mean taking a coffee break while you're emailing a schema or something, but it's...

    Random Encounters

    > The incredible beauty of the tango, the undeniable romance of dancing under the stars on a warm evening, and before each dance, Sylvia carefully pointed out their route to her partner, in order to avoid the holes in the pavement. You write really well Redpossum, your posts are a pleasure to read.

    Getting Married, Witnesses Needed!

Hey Caroline & Bronagh, Wonderful that you're getting married - but why here? Civil registry wedding in Ireland will make things much simpler for you in the future. eg. I'm treated as a single Irish person by the irish revenue, because it's too much hassle to convince them that I'm married...

Lan Airlines Won't Give Refunds On Refundable Tickets

I'd certainly expect you to get the refund then. In my case a forwarded email was sufficient (and in fact I think I forwarded the email I sent, rather than the reply). It's trivial to forge, but I don't think that bothers them. Can't like your facebook post I'm afraid (but would if I could)...

Lan Airlines Won't Give Refunds On Refundable Tickets

I'd be inclined to skip lan and go straight to the credit card company for a refund. In my experience (although it wasn't with a flight), if you can prove that you have attempted to get the refund from the company, and of course that you're due it (do you have any email acknowledgement from...

    Bitcoin Corralito?

Does anyone know of a cueva that exchanges bitcoin? I've heard mention of the "bitcoin blue", and also there was some mention of cuevas buying it at the bitcoin summit here a few months back - but my own local cueva doesn't appear to be on board yet.

    Recommendations For A Tax Accountant

Thanks for the reply bajo_cero - appreciate the input. :) I should probably clarify that I didn't work here (or at least not in any real sense). I spend approx 10-15 weeks in Ireland every year, and my work is completed and billed while I'm there. I am liable for Irish taxes because I'm an...

    Recommendations For A Tax Accountant

Hi all, I've received a notification from the AFIP that I'm due for a "Fiscalización Electrónica", and I'm need of the assistance of a good personal tax accountant (maybe who specialises in expats?) to guide me through the process. Would anyone have any recommendations/advice please? In...

Anyone Going To The Bitcoin Conference Next Weekend In Bsas?

Don't think anyone posted this yet: http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/4903fc9a-591f-11e3-a7cb-00144feabdc0.html I think ft is behind a paywall, so, to summarise, it says that Alderney (apparently with UK approval) is planning to mint coins which would be pegged to the BTC. The article is a little...

Anyone Going To The Bitcoin Conference Next Weekend In Bsas?

@d2ba: If you've still got money in any of your irish accounts, I've bought btc off this guy without issue. pm me if you want any further details. And regarding litecoin, it's rising a lot quicker than btc at the moment (for the last few days). Highly unstable though (and that's *relative to*...

Ipad Fix Or If Not Buy New

I have a fix for that too :) Lots of new stuff on the App Store is ios 7 only (the internals have changed quite a bit). So just find something there that you might need, and convince yourself (or herself?) that it's vital to your survival. ... new iPad is the only option then :)

Ipad Fix Or If Not Buy New

Before bringing it anywhere, defo worth trying to reset it first. Hold down both buttons together for 10 secs. I've seen that bring them back to life in the past. (Obviously assuming it's charged and such!)

Anyone Know Of Good Websites For American Tv Shows/movies?

I should probably plug my own software here too: tvtumbler. It's still pre-alpha (meaning it's still in development), but does all what tvshows2 does, and more. And it's completely free and open source. It runs as an addon to xbmc (which means it's cross platform, it'll run on pretty much...

    Wifi In My Apt

The 2.4Ghz band is very congested around the city now, *especially* now that so many people use 802.11n on channel 6 (which is something of bandwidth hog). Happy to report though that most people don't use the 5Ghz band at all. So, get a reasonably modern router that supports 802.11n on the...

    Int'l Married Couples-- Advice, Please!

We got married (legal & religious) in BA, mostly because (as in your case) my friends/family had a better chance of making the journey from Ireland than my wife's would have from Argentina. I was amazed at the number of people who made the journey. I had a few family there, but an unexpected...

Atm's In Ba, For An Irishman

I think that might be to do with your bank account, as you suggested. I've tried the Citibank atm's on more than one occasion at more than one location (the magical non-banelco ones) without success. They gave me some kind of error (Error 37 comes to mind, it was something like that anyway)...

Atm's In Ba, For An Irishman

One more thing: make sure that your bank in Ireland has an up to date mobile number for you. I regularly (even after ~6 years here) get calls from them to verify that I was actually the one using the card. Granted, I travel a lot, but it seems that just using an Irish card (debit or credit)...

Atm's In Ba, For An Irishman

Also, something to be aware of: (haven't seen it discussed much here recently b/c no one uses ATMs any longer, but it still applies I think) There was a ARS 1k limit per transaction on ATM withdrawals. Actually, I think it may have been USD100, converted at the official rate (which now would...

    Internet Disfunctional Now

update: I'm having the same issue it seems. Couldn't get my mail from a server in Ireland (connection didn't actually time out, but was <1kbps), connected via a vpn (also to a server in ireland, but in a different data centre), and no issues. I think this is the traffic shaping thing again...

    Internet Disfunctional Now

@arlean: yeah, you'd probably need to pay for any kind of a fast one. Tor (as Gringoboy suggest) would work too, but it's pretty slow for everyday stuff. I was just suggesting it b/c you might already have one (lots of expats use one for watching TV and such), but it's not worth setting one up...
