Bringing Electronics into ARG from the States

I flew in from Rome a few days ago, and they didn't even give us aduanas forms to fill out. Which was a weird but pleasant surprise. And when it was my turn at the scanner, I didn't place my handbag or jacket on the belt, and wasn't asked to. So any iPhones or Blackberries, I'd recommend just...

    Taking Money out of Country

It doesn't matter whether it's in dollars or pesos. The limit for undeclared cash brought into or out of the country is USD10,000 or its equivalent (in foreign currency, traveler's checks, gold or silver, etc.)

    Buying a car with dollars

So are they using the dogs at Ezeiza yet or what? I've read mentions of them being in airports, but I simply cannot imagine how that process would work (detaining every person in the security line carrying dollars in amounts that may or may not be over the legal limit?)

    Taking pesos out of Argentina

Have you thought about taking your pesos out of the country on a pre-paid credit card? Mastercard has an Argentine one specifically for travel, so I assume you can use it like a regular credit card abroad ... though God only knows at this point. I don't know what kind of fees you'd be looking...

Got 6.40 for euros this week.

Blue Dollar: Peso has devalued 22% over the last 30 days

Patrick Newton, would you mind sharing where you exchanged for 6? I'll need to sell some dollars early next week. Thanks.

Blue Dollar: Peso has devalued 22% over the last 30 days

I return on Monday, and will be selling just enough dollars to pay my living expenses for the next week or so (then when I run out of cash, rinse and repeat). Since the rate will either be (at best) more favorable or (at worst) the same in the following weeks, putting it off definitely seems...

David, go to User CP, and then in the menu on left, click Edit Options. On that page you should see a box that says "Click to receive private messages" (or something to that effect.) And ya esta!

Looking for a good "closed-door" restaraunt?

I went to Casa Saltshaker once, and my meal was HORRIBLE. I still gag thinking about those dishes, like flavor combinations somebody had thought up while high on pot. I haven't tried Casa Mun, but it receives almost universally favorable reviews.

Trennod is on the mark re: language institutes. A number of them take advantage of foreigners by overcharging while offering second-rate materials, building amenities, and/or teachers (they are only earning about 30 pesos an hour, so you can't blame them for just showing up and teaching out of...

    Declaring cash upon leaving EZE

Has anyone actually done this? And made it out of the country with all of their dollars in tow? It's a very straightforward process when leaving the US or EU with more than 10K in cash -- you fill out a form and as long as you don't look like a money launderer, they send you on your merry way...

Street crime as a cultural issue

Like my Argentine partner says (referring to Argentines' general attitude towards everything): "Somos resignados."

    Subte strike

Heh, I remember the big subway strike, and hoofing it 5 miles home that night. Compared to the comfort and efficiency of the London tube, Madrid metro, or Berlin U-bahn, the MTA does indeed suck... BUT. It runs 24 hours a day, includes free bus transfers, and will take you to the farthest end of...

    Subte strike

It's a pipe dream, I know, but I really wish the city would invest in making the streets more bike-friendly. I'd happily zip everywhere on bike, and never use another subte again, if I weren't terrified of being aplastada.

    BsAs Safety

To the OP: If you're only visiting for 3 days, you'll almost certainly be fine (barring some kind of extreme bad luck.) I think encountering theft or petty crime becomes much more likely as a long-term resident (since there's more and more opportunity to end up in the wrong place at the wrong...

    Shipping Concerns

Well, all I can say is give those laptops a big ol' kiss before you send them to aduanas, because Lord knows if you'll ever see them again.

    Help finding one-week apt

Soloduenos and Flipkey are alternative rental sites she could try, though I've never used either of them myself. Also, if she's willing to look into the option of homestays (as opposed to a private apt.), I would recommend the site www.homestaybooking.com.

    Average salary for TEFL teacher.

I've taught in both the U.S. (at a private school in San Francisco and a state university in FL) and Buenos Aires, and it was 1,000% easier to live on my income in the U.S. (plus, working conditions are much better.) Just to give you an idea of the wage gap: in the U.S., when I was just a...

    Average salary for TEFL teacher.

23 pesos an hour?? With current prices and inflation, that is absolutely HORRIFYING. When I taught with an institute, I got 40 pesos an hour if students came to me, and 50 if I had to travel someplace ridiculous like Belgrano. The pay was still too low to keep me working (and now it might be a...

Imports, really feeling the pinch now

In related news... We are planning to switch from our current Internet provider (Speedy) to Fibertel, which will save us AR150 per month. Have been informed by Fibertel that for now, they can only hook us up to a cable modem connection - no Wifi. The reason? They have run out of wireless...
