Best uk card / bank to use

HSBC premier is free of monthly charges if you maintain the minimum balance. That differs depending on what country you open an account in. They do not charge at ATMs and refund on the first of the month any charges levied by Banelco or similar (around 4 usd each time you withdraw). HSBC may...

Just for fun - if you wanted to blow a lot of cash on a big night out in BsAs...

Went to La cabrera with a friend, we ordered wine and as much food (well more food) than we could eat, and still couldn't get the bill to more than 250 pesos. I love this town!

Best US Debit Card (Not credit Card) to use in Buenos Aires?

I use StrongVPN and think it works just great - it is not free but you sometimes get what you pay for, and it's not that pricey. www.strongvpn.com

Run to US - need anything?

I have to dash back to the US for a week in March. If anyone needs a small electronic, etc., let me know - you can order it and have it shipped to my house there, and I will ferry it back to you. Nothing too big.

For future reference... L'Abeille makes a decent gin martini. V. dry.

Just for fun - if you wanted to blow a lot of cash on a big night out in BsAs...

I actually quite like the library bar at the Faena. I haven't checked out the tango show - sounds like it might be too touristy for me. The bar has good cocktails, though, and on a nice day it's good to sit by the pool bar. They also have a decent scotch selection. Has anyone had dinner in one...

Just for fun - if you wanted to blow a lot of cash on a big night out in BsAs...

This is for fun, although I'm hoping to get some good suggestions as far as swanky places to check out... Part of the origin of this was that a friend and I were commenting that, unlike San Francisco or London, it's hard to find a drink here that would cost more than $10 US, even at the more...

    Translation help!

Yes, very common in the US or the UK. Just ask for a "full set" - that means a full set of sculpted on acrylics. Or the new thing if you don't want to have longer nails is the OPI gel polish, which is an acrylic color gel paint that gives a similar effect but is supposed to be better for your nails.

    Name of the shutter

Do you mean the blackout shutters outside the apartment? "Blackout" will usually suffice. What happened to them? Sometimes they get stuck up above the window - a wire coat hanger can catch them and pull them down (just be careful not to break them)

    Translation help!

Either gel nails or acrylic nails, depending on exactly the kind of nail you want - the phrase is literally sculpted nails, so that could be gel or acrylic.

    Change in expat attitudes?

Many of us are here for work and not because we think it is "cheap." Although one of the major sources of headache I have had here has been reconciling what my company's relocation managers in the US and Europe had on paper for what cost of living "should" be (based on false inflation numbers...

    Change in expat attitudes?

Anecdotally, I have heard more expats and locals alike actually make plans for (rather than just talk about) leaving in the past 6 to 8 weeks. It is hard to put my finger on it, but there is generally less optimism around these days. I know a lot of expats who went home at Christmas and just...

    Work and Salary Expectations

I work here as an expat for a big multinational - I am pretty sure at the end of 2010 everyone here got a 20% cost of living increase in 2 stages, one of 13% and one of 7%. I only heard this in passing, but it would fit with what others are saying. I am also frequently frustrated by the work...

    ibuprofen & ibuprofen

It's a medication that I use regularly that would be very very rare for anyone to be allergic to - my doctor said that it was a reaction to one of the additives.

    ibuprofen & ibuprofen

Generics are not necessarily the same as each other or the same as brand name medications here. They can contain for example other inactive ingredients. I learned this the hard way after having a terrible allergic reaction to a generic medication here. It's definitely "buyer beware." I think I...

English speaking doctor who makes house calls?

I have insurance that will pay anywhere, I just really need to see a doctor today, preferably someone good and at a private clinic, and can't travel far from Belgrano. I have had another doctor tell me this problem was "nothing" 3 weeks ago and then last week was given a medicine I had a...
