A Sea Lion Made me Go to Germany:My Trip Outta BsAs!

I had a trip like this flying to BsAs from Mexico City with my cat and 5 suitcases. My passport was stolen while I was waiting in line to board the flight to Lima, my credit card had been blocked inadvertently, I had no money of any currency, it was Saturday night, etc. etc. One of the hugest...

    Looking for a tango partner

My Argentine partner and I (expat from California) teach traditional tango in Boedo, and we invite you to join our friendly table of friends and students at the Milonga de los Consagrados on Saturdays. We are always there from 7-10. Just ask at the door for the table of Ruben y Cherie. It's a...

    screens for windows

After six years living here, we finally got screens last week. You have to take the measurements very carefully and have them made. Ours turned out great, and it's quite a relief from the mosquitoes.

    New Year's in Argentina

Just remember that there's "no" transportation on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve--no taxis, few colectivos. So even if you can find a place to go and can get there, it can be very difficult to get home if you don't have your own car. Taxis start running again around 4 a.m. Best to go somewhere...

Do they sell real Christmas trees?

Just to reiterate, the only place to find a real Christmas tree is in a nursery, where they are sold potted. In the 5 years I've lived here I've bought two. I can not have a plastic tree. But decorations are sold everyplace, no problem. The problem with going out on Christmas Eve and New Year's...

La Viruta, English-speaking Group Tango Lessons?

The only problem with such group lessons is that the basic step of tango is the walk, and I bet they were teaching patterns, and "counts" as you say. Also you end up dancing with someone who knows even less then you. If you can possibly manage a few private lessons first to acquire some...

    Another pickpocket scam ...

The bird poop scam is universal, especially in Europe. The other day, when my husband was traveling by train (because his old car had been stolen in front of our apartment), a guy reached through the open window of the train while it was at the station, and jerked my husband's gold chain from...

Excellent New Tango Video ( Differente)

The Gotan Project is French, but I'm sure most of you know that Gotan is Lunfardo (a reves) for tango. Piazzolla is another "type" of music, more French and American jazz, than tango. It is gorgeous and is used in ALL the traveling and tourist tango shows, but the milongueros do not dance to...

Excellent New Tango Video ( Differente)

Hola! Here is the DiosTango magazine's video of Ruben and myself performing a milonga in the homage to Ricardo Tanturi a couple of weeks ago in La Ideal. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ffxRT8hZlb4 For those in Buenos Aires, we will be performing to Miguel Calo in Salon Argentina next month...

Anybody going to the tango championships tonight?

Hola Van, I'm just curious--my Argentine partner and I finished #14 in the Campeonato Metropolitano 2006. Is this the same? We are always out in the milongas and haven't heard anything about this "Ciudad" championship. Are the finals in La Rural in August? It just seems totally different this...

    Food revolution bypasses Buenos Aires

Let me just say that my Argentine partner and I returned from two weeks teaching tango on a magnificent cruise ship (Radiance of the Seas). The food offered was varied, delicious, abundant. I enjoyed sushi, Thai, Indian, Mexican, leg of lamb, sea food, vegetables of all types, etc. Ruben ate...

    pollution in BA

I never had asthma until I moved here in 2004. Since then I've had to go to the hospital several times for injections. What can I say? Now I take anti-allergy medicine every day, and stay at home as much as possible. Just walking in the streets behind belching buses can make me sick. It's...

Baexpats end of the year dinner TONIGHT!

Thank you so much for planning this! The last five years of the holiday season in Buenos Aires have been difficult for me; hence, this year I planned to go out of town. And I'm leaving on Tuesday! Have a great dinner--can't wait to try the resto when I return. Felices Fiestas to all!
