Anyone Else Experience An Attempted Robbery On Christmas?

My (Argie) friend got robbed on the next street a few days before Xmas. He was coming over from the airport and two motochorros with a gun came up on him right after exiting a cab. The day before and the day after this I was on the scene as pedestrians got hit by vehicles (two seperate...

    Puerta Cerrada Complications?

Thanks for all the links Ries, I guess it is evident that I haven't been back to NYC in a while. When I lived there I had a newspaper restaurant review column and during Giuliani's regime, at least, they had health inspectors all up in their grills :) so that surprises me. I was going on what a...

    A Fond And Sad Farewell

Sorry to hear that. Even under the best of circumstances restaurants are a notoriously tough business. I was wanting to ask if you thought Puerta Cerradas were unfair competition for legit dining establishments? And... if you can't beat them, why not join them? I'd love to be able to eat...

    Puerta Cerrada Complications?

Puerta Cerradas. There are a few 'ex-pat' owned ones that have come and gone. Considering the low-overhead (no rent, no taxes, can only buy seasonal foods, etc.) they are a prety good gig. Does any one know of Puerta Cerradas that have closed because the owners were nervous about AFIP or...

What To Wear Day To Day!!

The fellows think it is more than acceptable to walk around like that (!), but personally I would feel very uncomfortable. There is a lot of harassment in the streets. It is usually not threatening in nature, but you will get constant commentary -- mostly from the kind of guys who drink and...

No Gas In Our Building For The Next Three Months!

Same thing happened to me this last winter in my apt. -- not the whole building, thank goodness. It was just another in a long line of odysseys (this wk no electricity!). The regulations were updated in 2008, so most apartments in the city are not up to code. Consequently I have lightly used (3...

Residencia Help! 3 Yrs Here & Cant Find Way To Be Permanent

Celano seems friendly but he is defending my wealthy expat neighbor who caused extensive water damage to several units in my building causing, among other things, mold and health issues for residents, including a small child for a period of years. No responce to cartas de documentos, no-shows at...

Burundanga !!! Dangerous Drug To Be On The Look Out For ...

It happened to a friend of mine here after befriending a Venezuelan in a cafe in Retiro. He was led around to different ATM's (b/c of withdrawal limits) until he had willing emptied his bank account and given all the money to the thief.

    Expat Deported At Ezeiza

That is really too bad. Two questions: Was the immigration officer looking for what is politely known as 'baksheesh' (coima)? My friend who works at the airport told me they roll like that and I also had an unpleasant encounter of that nature at Eze. If he had with him his numero de...

    Potential Job Or Info Request

I had a similar project w/ historic photos once. I submerged the pages in lukewarm water to detach, and then refixed them in 'fijador', washed them, then hung them to dry and then put them in special protective sleeves. Test one first though to make sure they were fixed well in the first place.

Depressed That Your Friends Have No Money?

Most of my friends here are sadly allergic to work, even if I line up an opportunity for them, they find some reason they are too good for it or they flake out on it. They also get offended if I'm too tired or busy working to recieve them at my house at all hours or party all night. I have few...

The Use Of The Word, "lynching" In The Media.

My head is spinning! That lack of personal responsibility to be decent, regardless of circumstances, is at the heart of the problem. I've known since they were little a gang of now young adults that hang out on my street. These are all kids that live in gov. funded pensiones or casas tomadas...

Infographic About Expat Life -- It's Not Always Smooth!

I very much disagree when it comes to Argentina. While I think it is important to learn the language and intergrate anywhere you live, I was much happier here before I fully understood exactly what people were saying and their associated alterior motives. Also while the people who live here 5+...
