    Restaurant Survival Guide

Sorry to hear you have only experienced food here that you rate poor or at best indifferent. I’ve had some fantastic meals here in the past 14 months and I wish I’d paid more attention to the names and addresses of all of these places to recommend them to you and others. I’ve listed a few below...

    Apartment rentals outside BA

Hello, I found it depends if you are searching for long or short term rental. Short term rental is very expensive. Long term is 24 months or more and most places ask for a guarantor. Once you start searching for long term rental you will notice the drop in price. Try www.zonaprop.com.ar/ or...

    TEFL in Buenos Aires

It seems from what you say and everything I have read now that there is 'TEFL experience' = anything over 20 hours and then a 'TEFL certificate' = 120 hours. I almost did the first part of the TEFL in London on a recent trip home, still around the same price as Howard mentioned £210 but for the...

    TEFL in Buenos Aires

I have decided to do the TEFL but have a few questions. I am looking into online options and some courses run by English Schools. I am currently volunteering at an English School for extra experience. What is the minimum requirement of TEFL components to be able to say you are a 'qualified TEFL...

Safe area to rent in BsAs ?

I lived on Marcelo T Alvear and Esmeralda for 6 months when I first arrived. It was the perfect spot to explore BsAs and decide where to live longer term. There is more than one decent hotel but into the small hours it's harder to find nice bars than an area like Palermo as the last post says...

    i need to learn spanish!!

It's true. You will need a coat and scarf in winter and light clothes in summer, UBA is a funny old building and so if it's comfort you want you will have to pay more. Social outings are a factor too, it's true. UBA don't organise any for you but in fact I found it more sociable than other...

    i need to learn spanish!!

Quote: Could you please state the division of the UBA where you went? I wanted to do a course, and besides being about 30 pesos per hour, the course got canceled and getting the money back was really difficult (or almost would have been. After they told me it will take 2 months to give me back...

    i need to learn spanish!!

Hi Shane, I've tried a few places and different methods and in my opinion UBA, the University of Buenos Aires, is by far the best. You can do between 4 hours a day or 4 hours a week depending. It works out about 15 pesos an hour. There is an exam at the end of each level too. Good luck!

    Watching TV online

Can anyone tell me how to trick my computer into thinking it's still in the UK? After a trip to England I'm really missing the on demand TV. I know there was a similar post on here a couple of months ago but I didn't manage to find it. Many thanks,

    Lets be positive people

Interesting. 8 months here, with many years to follow I find myself reflecting ...which ties in well with this posts 'adjustment phase' just in time to return home to England for 6 weeks where I'll experience some 'reverse culture shock', I'm sure. I enjoyed reading it thanks. I love being...

Know any creative ways to practise Spanish?

Thanks Iheartbsas, if I do find another language exchange partner who wants to do some more practise I will send them your way. Last night a friend who works in one of the hospitals suggested putting up a notice there for the staff who may want to practise medical English (I am/was a Nurse)...

Know any creative ways to practise Spanish?

When I arrived in BA last October I found a post on here for 'Spanglish' but decided it wasn't for me and set up a meeting once a week over a coffee with an aquaintance, purely for conversation, as an alternative. It works well but sadly, 8 months on, this hour is the only time in the week I...

    (Oil) painting classes

Hi, this thread is really interesting to me as I came to Argentina with the intention of developing my oil painting skills but didn't manage to find a specific class. I'd be interested to know how you get on, always keen to get to know more painters! At the moment I go to a studio nr Congreso...

    Doctors...health care in BA

Oh dear well it seems there are plenty of people dying to give the HB a good bashing and at the same time I have heard countless stories from other people about other plans which are equally negative. I think I will have to explore the options in my existing health care plan a little more before...

Cheers for the number Fred, in English too...fabulous, I'd heard a rumour such a number existed but it would have been too easy for someone to give me that when we joined the scheme! lwfh....great description of the culture, that really answers so many of questions since moving here. Thanks...

    Doctors...health care in BA

My question was really to see if anyone with spanish as poor as mine had had any experiences to share about the booking process here, for routine appointments, rept prescriptions, that sort of thing. I have been impressed so far at a routine appt but I don't like having to rely on native...

    Doctors...health care in BA

After using, working for and contributing to the good ld NHS for many years I was excited to learn I am entitled to private health care in Argentina with my husbands job. Nice! So far I have had one booking to see a doctor, made over the phone by a kind Argentine, within 24 hours, the Dr was...

Blonde small girl in Buenos Aires. How dangerous will it be for me??

You will be fine here! As a former blonde I have first hand experience of being grabbed in Europe, N Africa and a little in Asia. Never as bad as some of the stories my friends have from India where it's literally impossible to walk down a street. I know the kind of scenario you are talking...
