Is BA the Right Place for Me?

Joe, Please also consider that I 100 percent agree Argentina is likely to get alot more expensive for expats!! The Thailand baht has already made a major currency move, while the peso has not. http://www.economist.com/world/la/displaystory.cfm?story_id=9988808 This is because according to this...

Is BA the Right Place for Me?

Funny about that. I have been to that place. A funny style of Korean food and nice to have but it doesn't compare to Korean food to be found in the US or Thailand. I think BA people know what I mean about the overall narrow limitations of Argentinian tastes on things like food.

Is BA the Right Place for Me?

I live in Jomtien Beach, Thailand now and my only experience with BA was staying there for six weeks in a Barrio Norte. I loved BA but did find it a little bit one dimensional. For example, the steaks, wine, ice cream, and pasta, but try finding great Korean food, Indian food, Thai food, etc...

need U.S. retiree or unemployed tax advice

Nope! You absolutely do NOT need to file if your income (from anything, income, capital gains, interest, etc.) falls below defined levels. There are defined exceptions to this, of course.Read this page and answer the questions to determine if you need to file...

Money being held by Argentine banks?

I was mainly talking about WIRING money into an Argentine bank. Is it true that for the retirement visa you need to transfer in money to qualify for the visa? If that is true, that is an awful catch 22. Yes, otherwise, of course, you could use ATMs. But anyway you cut it, it sounds restrictive...

Money being held by Argentine banks?

Thanks for the info. So it is not being held for purchase of property, thats the good news. Is there a dollar level where they start holding; for example if you wire in 5,000 USD are you OK, but not OK if you wire in 10,000 USD? How are people dealing with this? (Loopholes?)

Money being held by Argentine banks?

I read on a blog (sorry don't have the source right now) that when people wire in money to a bank in Argentina that the banks freeze a LARGE CHUNK of the money for a very long time! Is this really true? Can someone talk about the details and their experiences with this. Seems to me this could...

Advice needed for Argentina Country Profile

Hello, writing again from http://www.retireaway.com Forum for Americans Retiring Abroad. The traffic and posts are finally starting to pick up, so I would like to include some more countries in the Retirement Country Profiles section. I don't have Argentina yet. I spent some time in BA and...

    expat tax extension info

Thanks Nashororma, Yes, indeed, there are alot of shysters in retiring abroad businesses. Some of them are obvious scams and others are much more crafty. In looking into retiring abroad, I was kind of rudely shocked about how complicated it is to deal with all the details. Since 911, there...

    expat tax extension info

Nashorima, Hi there, you just posted some excellent info that I am going to take some time to digest. Thanks! As far as www.RetireAway.com , I respect your opinion, but I would like to explain what the site is. It is a new site that is now being seeded mostly by me under the name Jeffrey...

    expat tax extension info

Villla, a question has come up on www.RetireAway.com about capital gains tax exclusion on primary residence. I wonder if you have an opinion. Lets say a US expat buys a flat in BA and lives there as his primary residence for over 5 years (to simplify, lets say it is a retiree), and then they...

    American Retired Expat Specific Issues

Hi there, I love Buenos Aires, but have chosen to retire in Thailand instead. I am running a forum board for Americans retiring abroad, including of course Argentina. This board doesn't compete with this charming site, rather it is an international board with this focus. For example, it is a...

    Gloom and Doom

I don't think this is a major concern. No matter what happens in the US, the vast majority of Americans will never have any desire or interest in being expats. So, there won't be a run for the border, and other coumtries will not have to change their immigration policies. I think there will be a...

    expat tax extension info

There is a new change for 2006. Automatic SIX MONTH extensions. Used to be you had to file a form for the first four month automatic extension, and then for the second two month extension, had to file another form with a stated reason (not automatic). In either case due taxes are still due on...

    expat tax extension info

There is an automatic extenstion expat exemption available if you are living abroad for the majority of the year, there is exact formula for this. Clearly you are ineligible for 2005, but does anyone know if you are living abroad in 2006 whether that gives you a break for 2005? You can download...

    Fast Food in Buenos Aires

OK, I'll bite but I probably shouldn't.It seems like we are talking politics here, and not so much fast food, not that they aren't related.I agree with you McDonalds and most fast food sell toxic food. However, face it, eating large fatty steaks everyday as well as pizzas, pastas, and rich...

    Fast Food in Buenos Aires

Fair enough.Yes, of course, McDonalds is a monolith and they have crappy food. But last time I checked, nobody forced anyone to eat there. I certainly don't!And I don't totally agree with you that local companies can't compete. There is a local coffee chain in the Philippines that is growing...

    Fast Food in Buenos Aires

I am also amazed at the popularity of American fast food outlets in BA.As an American, I don't eat in those places in the US or abroad. Why so popular? The convenience perhaps. There aren't that many places in BA where you can get fast food pronto and sit down in a large space, other than some...

    Trying to understand Buenos Aires

Probably this isn't the right forum for this, but I can't help but comment about the US health care system. A poster here in my opinion paints an overly rosy picture. I don't doubt Argentina's system is also flawed in totally different ways. However, in regards to the US system: Over 45...

    Mate, an Aphrodisiac?

Now, we all know mate has some interesting properties. I took to it right away although I am not wild about the taste, it is kind of habit forming. Well, er, despite my handle here, I am a 50 year old male, and I noticed some, shall we say, suprising effects from the mate. I tend to do large...
